Coordinator​/Instructor, Heavy Equipment Operation

Western Piedmont Community College (WPCC) seeks a full‑time Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO)/Coordinator and Instructor to start, lead, and grow a new Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree program and related short‑term and continuing education offerings in heavy equipment operation. Through hands‑on training, HEO programs and courses will equip students with the skills to succeed in the construction profession and evolving industry practices that support the workforce in Burke County and the surrounding region.

Responsibilities of the Coordinator/Instructor will include classroom and hands‑on training in the safe operation, maintenance, and use of heavy construction equipment. The Coordinator/Instructor will prepare students for employment in construction, excavation, utilities, and related industries. The ideal candidate combines industry expertise with a passion for teaching and a commitment to student success.

• Leads development of appropriate curriculum and continuing education opportunities.
• Supports workforce solutions such as internships, apprenticeships, and summer camps.
• Advises and guides students enrolled in HEO program offerings.
• Coordinates with local high schools to create HEO career pathways utilizing a sequence of courses culminating in an industry recognized certificate.
• Coordinates recruitment of students for the HEO program.
• Develops and maintains relationships with industry professionals and engage with an advisory committee to stay current with evolving industry trends and demands both locally and regionally.
• Develops program‑specific policies and procedures consistent with regulations and laws.
• Coordinates the development of appropriate program facilities and labs.
• Administers the program’s budget and grant resources in compliance with procurement processes and reporting required by the College’s Business Office.
• Evaluates and supports program faculty, including adjunct instructors.
• Performs additional duties as assigned by the Department Head of Engineering, Industrial Tech & Skilled Trades.

• Instructs assigned courses using a variety of techniques and methods of delivery; evaluate and develop curriculum and instructional materials; assess student academic progress; and develop appropriate course schedules.
• Effectively delivers course instruction to meet individual learning styles and paces and adapt teaching methods to accommodate students with diverse experiences and backgrounds.
• Prepares students for careers related to the construction profession, including students involved in the justice system.
• Ensures student comprehension of safety procedures, industry regulations, and best practices.
• Ensures program relevance by formal assessment. This should include a review of policies, procedures, facilities, resources, student learning outcomes, attrition, retention and performance of program completers.
• Works effectively with faculty and staff, especially those involved in related programs.
• Stays current in the subject area through continued professional development and active involvement in professional organizations and activities.

• High school diploma or equivalent
• 5 years of verifiable, hands‑on experience operating heavy construction equipment in a professional or commercial setting
• Demonstrated ability to safely operate multiple classes of heavy equipment, including earthmoving, grading, and lifting equipment
• Valid NC driver’s license
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Construction certification

• A.A.S. degree in Heavy Equipment Operation or related field
• Experience teaching in a college setting
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills
• NC Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
• NCCER Heavy Equipment Operations certification, or a strong, demonstrated commitment to obtain certification within the first year of employment.
• Bilingual (English/Spanish)
• Experience using computer software programs such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
• Commitment to certify as a custodial agent with the NC State Division of Prisons
