We are seeking a vigilant, compassionate, and proactive School Safety Officer to ensure the security and well‑being of our students, staff, and visitors. The ideal candidate will balance strong security protocols with a warm, approachable demeanor, serving not only as a protector of the school but also as a positive role model and mentor to our students.
Key Responsibilities- Assist with traffic and pedestrian control during morning drop‑off and afternoon dismissal to ensure student safety.
- Respond promptly and calmly to emergencies, lead and coordinate responses to critical incidents, including medical incidents, behavioral crises, or security threats, following school emergency protocols.
- Develop, maintain, and annually review the school's Emergency Operations Plan (EOP).
- Utilize de‑escalation techniques and trauma‑informed practices to manage student conflicts or behavioral issues.
- Collaborate closely with school administrators, counselors, teachers, and local law enforcement/first responders as needed.
- Conduct safety trainings and instruction for staff as requested by administration and provide opportunities for proactive student safety classes and information.
- Plan, schedule, conduct, document, and evaluate all required safety drills (fire, lockdown, lockout, severe weather, evacuation, shelter‑in‑place).
- Conduct regular campus safety assessments and security audits, identify vulnerabilities and implement corrective actions, and monitor and evaluate security procedures and protocols.
- Manage the main entrance, ensuring all visitors, volunteers, and vendors properly check in, present valid , and wear visible visitor badges.
- Monitor and operate school security systems, including CCTV cameras, access control systems, and alarm panels.
- Conduct regular, daily interior and exterior patrols of school buildings, playgrounds, parking lots, and perimeter grounds.
- Monitor “See Something, Say Something” platform duties, as assigned and required.
- Recommend and oversee implementation of security enhancements.
- Conduct regular inspections of safety equipment and emergency supplies.
- Build positive, trusting relationships with students, greeting them by name and fostering a welcoming environment.
- Assist with supervising students during recess, lunch periods, or before/after‑school programs as directed.
- Serve as a visible, reassuring presence that deters misconduct while promoting a culture of respect and safety.
- Develop strong relationships with local, regional, and state law enforcement to include periodic walk‑throughs, encouraging familiarity with our building and modeling healthy relationships with law enforcement for students and families.
- Maintain accurate daily logs, visitor records, and detailed incident reports.
- Attend relevant staff meetings and participate in ongoing school safety training and drills (e.g., fire, lockdown, severe weather).
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Education, or a related field.
- Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in school safety, security, law enforcement, military, or a related field. Experience working with children and adolescents is highly preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm, professional, and decisive under pressure.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a genuine passion for working with youth.
- Proficiency with basic computer systems and security technology.
- Valid state driver’s license.
- Current CPR/First Aid/AED certification (or willingness to obtain within 90 days of hire).
- Physical ability to actively patrol facilities and respond quickly to incidents, stand/walk/climb stairs for extended periods, lift emergency equipment, and work evenings/weekends as needed.
- Must pass a comprehensive federal and state background check, including fingerprinting, and maintain a clean driving record.
