Job Description

$15.00 per hour, 4-6 hours per day.

Nature of Work

Ride a school bus on assigned route(s) to provide safe and efficient transportation for students while maintaining good relations with parents/guardians and school personnel.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lifts and carries students with disabilities on and off the bus according to their individual needs.
  • Supervises student(s) as they board and leave the bus and cross streets.
  • Takes children into the building and helps them find their way.
  • Learns and adapts to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
  • Manages student behavior and reports student discipline problems to the appropriate administrator.
  • Becomes familiar with all routes to and from the school campus to be of assistance to the driver.
  • Supervises use of seat belts, harnesses, or car seats by students.
  • Follows emergency procedures and helps driver administer first aid if necessary.
  • Operates equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Follows established procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, assisting students, etc.
  • Becomes familiar with and follows procedures established by transportation and special education offices.
  • Helps the driver keep the bus clean.
  • Assumes responsibility for performing the personal care required under the I.E.P. during the pick-up, transporting, and unloading of students.
  • Maintains regular attendance.
  • Performs other related work as required.
Essential Job Functions
  • Be physically able to operate a school bus, including rapid braking, steering, and emergency exit within 20 seconds.
  • Be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly.
  • Have ability to read correspondence, reports, instructions, etc.
  • Possess strong verbal communication skills; express poise, voice control, and confidence.
  • Apply common sense to carry out written, oral, or diagrammatic instructions.
  • Coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately while operating a school bus.
  • Recognize standard traffic signal colors (red, green, amber).
  • Have sufficient hearing to distinguish warning sounds such as horns, screeching tires, sirens, grade‑crossing alarms, and train whistles.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of safe and efficient practices and procedures for operating a school bus.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and school bus regulations.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and standards for school buses.
  • General knowledge of Transportation Department instructions.
  • Ability to physically inspect the bus per Department instructions.
  • Ability to detect and report observable mechanical defects or failures on the school bus.
  • Ability to maintain discipline of students assigned to ride the school bus.
  • Ability to maintain a clean school bus.
  • Ability to complete required reports.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in applying standards to a variety of work situations.
  • Ability to exercise tact and courtesy with parents/guardians, students, and school personnel.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as needed.
