The Department of Orthopaedics at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Clinical and Academic Communications Liaison.
About the Opportunity
This position will bridge clinical outreach, academic communications, and digital content creation to promote clinical excellence, education, and research within the Department of Orthopaedics. This role is responsible for departmental communications, clinical marketing, and digital content creation, and connects clinical outreach and academic communications to strengthen awareness of orthopaedic services, faculty accomplishments, research initiatives, and residency/education programs while ensuring brand compliance, accuracy, and HIPAA-aligned practices.

- Develop and distribute department newsletters, announcements, and timely updates for faculty, residents, staff, and alumni.
- Support the design and communication of faculty clinical, teaching, and operating room schedules to ensure alignment across departmental/divisional operations.
- Serve as a liaison with WVU Medicine Marketing/Branding to ensure message alignment, brand consistency, and approvals.
- Coordinate internal communications related to schedules, academic calendars, and departmental initiatives.
- Plan, write, design, and publish content across social media, digital channels, and digital signage.
- Standardize and support research presentation, poster, and figure development (templates, layout guidance).
- Assist in building scientific presentations and PowerPoint decks for grand rounds, conferences, and CME events.
- Support abstracts, research highlights, and visual summaries in partnership with faculty, fellows, residents, and research staff.
- Develop patient-friendly educational materials.
- Help manage online reputation and provider visibility in coordination with institutional teams.
- Support communications and content for departmental events.
- Track engagement metrics and prepare summary reports.
Pay Grade: 16
Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Graphic Design, or related field.
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience in the following:
- Marketing, communications, or digital content creation (healthcare or academic setting preferred).
- Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
- All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.
Skills and Abilities
- Possess exceptional creative, professional, and technical writing skills tailored for clinical, academic and digital audiences.
- Efficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat) for professional content design.
- Efficiency with Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Knowledge of content strategy, digital storytelling, and editorial best practices for academic healthcare settings.
- Knowledge of SEO/SEM and content optimization.
- Direct experience in healthcare or academic communications preferred.
- Time management and prioritization skills with the ability to meet multiple deadlines and manage multiple concurrent projects in a fast-paced academic environment.
- Strong understanding of visual communication, print production, and digital asset management workflows.
- Resourceful, with the ability to learn and integrate new digital tools and platforms quickly.
- Skilled in data-driven decision-making and interpreting engagement analytics to improve communication strategies.
- Results-oriented, creative, and solution-focused with a collaborative, problem-solving approach.
- Excellent attention to detail and quality control, ensuring accuracy in clinical and academic communications.
