The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at West Virginia University seeks to hire two full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professors in Criminology. The preferred start date is August 14, 2026. We welcome applications that can contribute broadly to our Sociology/Criminology curriculum, we also encourage scholars with expertise in policing, punishment, or crime control policy to apply.
The Department offers Bachelor of Arts degrees in Criminology, Sociology, Anthropology, and Women & Gender Studies, as well as a PhD in Sociology. The Criminology program is popular, serving more than 500 majors and 300 minors. The doctoral program currently serves about 30 full- and part-time students.
Responsibilities:
The persons hired in these positions will maintain an active research agenda that advances the Department's programs in the area of sociology of crime. They will be expected to regularly publish in high-quality peer-reviewed journals. The successful candidates will teach both graduate and undergraduate courses, develop new course offerings, and advise students. The teaching load is competitive with doctoral granting programs.
The candidate will also be expected to serve the community, university, and profession.
Professional
Qualifications:
The successful candidates must have a Ph.D. in Sociology, Criminology, or a related field that reflects a sociological perspective. We will consider ABD candidates, but the Ph.D. must be conferred by the start date. Candidates must demonstrate evidence of and commitment to establishing an excellent record of teaching and mentorship/advising; evidence of the ability to establish an active research agenda; excellent written and oral communication skills;
and excellent interpersonal skills.
