Position: (Hybrid) Advising Specialist - Office of the Dean, Eberly College of Arts and Sciences

The Academic Affairs Office in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University is seeking applications for an Advising Specialist.

About the Opportunity

This position will provide academic advising to students enrolled in specific Eberly majors. They will create or support programming at the college level for advisors, students, and other stakeholders to enhance the quality of advising and student support. They will assess advising practices and act as a lead communicator among advising contacts and data related to student retention and best practices related to student success.

What You'll Do Academic Advising and Related Programming
  • Develop academic advising for students in select Eberly majors (~250 primary majors)
  • Develop academic advising for probationary students and students facing academic difficulties
  • Establish short‑term plans for students who are meeting major benchmarks
  • Identify and communicate missing or needed requirements for timely progression through intended major
  • Assist students to select from alternate majors that will lead to graduation and a career of interest to them
  • In coordination with the Director, communicate with Departments to remain up to date regarding changes and updates
  • Perform necessary record‑keeping, including 90 credit checks and graduation checks
  • Create three‑term plans for financial aid
  • Lead development of program initiatives for Eberly College
  • Serve as lead contact for Academic Success Plans (ASPs)
  • Acquire knowledge of federal financial aid and scholarship requirements
  • Provide career development guidance for students
  • Provide referrals and support related to experiential learning opportunities
  • Develop and support programming for New Student Orientation advising and College
  • Develop and support programming for Mid‑Year Academy
  • Serve as one of the lead communicators for the Eberly advising community
  • Serve as a lead communicator to advisors in the College
Retention, Recruitment, Assessment & Outreach
  • Review data and prepare reports in conjunction with the Director that assess the effectiveness of probationary and student success programming
  • Review and analyze data related to probationary student retention and performance
  • Analyze outreach strategies to probationary students to determine effectiveness
  • Serve as a member of Eberly's advising board and other college and university committees
  • Maintain awareness of and conduct research pertaining to national standards for student retention
  • Identify and provide timely outreach for struggling students to assist in college/university retention initiatives
  • Actively participate in/developing programming for the training and development of advisers in the College
  • Actively participate in and/or supervise College committees pertaining to advising and undergraduate performance
  • Provide assistance with recruitment events and initiatives in which the College participates
  • Acquire knowledge of all procedures that are part of the Eberly College's Academic Affairs Office routine: change of major, adding a major or degree, graduation certification, so as to be able to assist Student Records Officer during graduation periods
  • Teach First Year Seminar as assigned
  • Teach Eberly probationary courses or other appropriate courses as assigned
  • Develop programming to support at‑risk students
  • Participate in Eberly Connect Series in fall and Spring semesters
  • Research best practices and novel approaches to collegiate advising for both at‑risk, first‑generation students
  • Develop assessment reports (in conjunction with the Director) pertaining to the outcomes of advising general advising practices within the College
