JOB GOAL:
To provide new teachers with professional partnerships which may give them opportunities for improving instruction, bonding with the system, and development of a collegial network.
- Possess a valid WV teaching certificate.
- Must have successfully completed or be willing to maintain Mentor Training provided by the West Virginia Department of Education.
- Must be a continuing contract teacher employed by Ohio County Schools.
- Masters' degree preferred.
- Excellent evaluations and attendance.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrated ability to motivate people.
- Interest in assisting teacher new to the profession.
- Ability to assist new teachers through a supervisory rather than evaluative approach.
- Ability to keep confidentiality standards.
- Interest in learning and teaching new instructional strategies.
- Willing to attend staff development sessions for mentors.
- Willing to present staff development sessions for the Teacher Induction Program.
- Teachers at the same school, teaching the same subject and grade level as new teachers will be given preference.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a collegial manner with administrators/administrative staff.
- Pre-conference, observe, and post-conference with assigned new teach once each week during the first semester and biweekly during the second semester.
- Assist new teachers in a supervisory rather than evaluative role.
- Attend all staff development sessions and complete necessary assignments for mentor teachers.
- Serve as a member of the professional support team which meets monthly.
- Keep the principal informed of interventions with the assigned new teacher while maintaining confidentiality.
- Keep interventions and discussions regarding the novice teacher confidential.
- Learn, practice, and teach instructional strategies to assigned new teacher.
- Provide written documentation of interventions with assigned new teacher.
- Maintain other pertinent records as required by the Teacher Induction Program.
- Develop a professional relationship with the assigned new teacher.
- Complete mentorship commitments beyond the instructional day when necessary.
- Complete any other duties as assigned by the Principal, Assistant Superintendent, or Superintendent.
