This position supervises and coordinates the staff and operations of the various Gross Rooms of the qua ternary academic medical center in support of high-quality patient care.

Minimum Qualifications Education, Certification, and/or Licensure
  • Current certification as a Pathologists’ Assistant through the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
  • Must possess current licensure as required by the state board where services will be provided.
  • Experience
  • Four (4) years of experience as a Pathologists’ Assistant.
  • Preferred Qualifications Experience
  • Five (5) years or more experience as a Pathologists’ Assistant.
  • Prior leadership experience to include evidence of involvement in quality initiatives and staff oversight.
  • Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate workflow in conjunction with other laboratories and clinical services for all tissue samples from gross room receipt through arrival in histology with monitoring of tissue quality to ensure optimum processing while identifying areas of improvement and implementing improvements to gain operational and clinical efficiencies.
  • Provide oversight of operations and staffing of all gross rooms in the Morgantown campus, to include Pathologists’ Assistants, Gross Room technicians, and trainees.
  • Provides strategic input in planning towards future states with hospital and system growth.
  • Monitors current policies and procedures; creates and implements new policies and procedures as appropriate.
  • Maintains accreditation readiness at all times of areas of oversight.
  • In‑services Pathologists’ Assistants and other Gross Room staff on new policies and procedures and monitors compliance.
  • Monitors workflow in the Gross Rooms daily and deploys personnel appropriately.
  • Supervises staff and oversees all Gross Room related workflows and processes while maintaining timely, high-quality work.
  • Performs daily pathology functions including frozen sections and processing specimens from various locations including but not limited to the operating room.
  • Assists in quality improvement initiatives and counsels staff on quality issues.
  • Documents training and competency assessments for staff following accreditation and regulatory standards.
  • May train pathology residents/fellows, pathologists’ assistant students, and other pathology lab personnel as needed.
  • Works cooperatively with Pathologist(s) and Medical Director(s) to meet the needs of a qua ternary academic medical center as well as community and critical access hospitals with the WVU Health System.
  • Participates in recruiting, hiring and orientation as well as completes performance evaluations of staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
