Assistant Superintendent – Parks and Recreation/Watoga State Park

Overview

Employee in this position will serve as the Assistant Superintendent at Watoga State Park. Employee is guided by statements of policy and outlined assignments from the Park Superintendent to help ensure business‑like, efficient, and responsible management. The role requires considerable discretionary judgment and initiative in working with the Park Superintendent in equipment maintenance, grounds maintenance, housekeeping, sanitation, public relations, law enforcement, personnel management/training, accounting, recordkeeping, revenue production, budget preparation/control, and all related matters.

The employee must be capable of performing and inspecting completed work in all areas of operation.

The employee may be assigned or directed to accept "off facility" responsibilities or special assignments that will take the employee from their principal area of assignment at Watoga State Park, including technical research projects, special events, supervision of other facilities, statewide temporary managerial assignments, forest fire fighting, and law enforcement duties. The employee may handle and resolve both written and verbal guest complaints, use oral and written instructions in a clear and concise manner, and effectively prepare written reports and correspondence.

The employee must assist in training and management of all personnel and may be required to attend Special Natural Resources Police Officer (SNRPO) training and attain certification if not already possessed. The employee will interact with and supervise the operation, maintenance, and protection of all or part of the following facilities on the 10,100 acres of Watoga State Park: 34 cabins, 100 campsites, arboretum, an 11‑acre lake with rowboat/paddle boat rentals, pickleball/game courts, nature center, picnic areas/rentable shelters, playgrounds, and hiking/cross‑country ski trails.

The employee will also assist with overseeing the management, operation, maintenance, and protection (law enforcement) of the following facilities:
Calvin Price State Forest (9,034 acres);
Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park (287 acres with battle‑related museum, picnic shelters, and observation tower);
Beartown State Park (110 acres and 1 mile of boardwalk);
Greenbrier River Trail (80 miles of rail‑trail and designated campsites). The employee must be licensed or eligible to operate a motor vehicle. On‑site housing valued at $1,000 per month is provided. Regular attendance is required.

The Agency reserves the right and authority to permanently transfer the employee holding this position to another position of equal classification and pay grade within and throughout the Parks and Recreation Section based on the business needs of the Agency.

  • If, at time of hire, the candidate possesses SNRPO certification, the candidate will be placed in a Classified position. If the candidate does not possess SNRPO certification, the candidate will be placed in a Classified‑Exempt position. Upon attaining SNRPO certification, the selected employee may apply and interview for posted positions in the classified service.
