Responsibilities
  • Adhere to WVBE Policy 5902 – “Employee Code of Conduct” and applicable WVSDB personnel policies.
  • Perform nursing functions in care of students on campus, including classrooms and dormitories.
  • Provide first‑aid and emergency measures according to established procedures.
  • Assist physician and school nurse/RN in examinations and treatments.
  • Attend staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Prepare, maintain, and transmit shift reports on patients, including condition, medication, symptoms, and physician orders.
  • Give general medical care to hearing‑ or visually‑impaired students in the Health Services Department and in school buildings/dormitories (hygiene, bed making, temperature, vital signs, etc.).
  • Provide specialized health‑care procedures such as tube feedings and dispense medications per assignments.
  • Administer medications as ordered or dictated by symptoms, including parenteral and non‑intravenous medications.
  • Advising, treating, and/or referring all outpatient and emergency or first‑aid cases.
  • Clean bedside units after discharge, maintain cleanliness, and restock supplies.
  • Keep accurate nurse’s notes and logs for each student (date, time, name, complaint, treatment or action taken).
  • Document student injuries, including photographs if abuse or neglect is suspected.
  • Assist physicians with evening rounds and physical examinations.
  • Serve meals at bedside and aid with feeding when indicated.
  • Perform medical treatments as required or ordered, such as enemas, suppositories, sponge baths, and compresses.
  • Stock clean linen and dress beds.
  • Transport students to local hospitals when indicated.
  • Take and record vital signs, collect specimens, administer treatments, and manage intravenous medications per physician orders.
  • Ensure safety, comfort, and well‑being of students on campus.
  • Answer the school switchboard during evening, night, and weekend shifts.
  • Operate campus radio for communication with other departments and security personnel.
  • Notify the school nurse/RN of pertinent incidents and use good professional judgment.
  • Perform tuberculin skin tests for employees or students as requested and track results.
  • Notify parents of admission to the Health Services Department or emergency treatment when requested.
  • Serve on committees designated by the school nurse, including participation in admission, IEP, or related meetings to provide medical history and background information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications
  • Licensed by the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Practical Nurses.
  • Three or more years of full‑time employment as a Licensed Practical Nurse (preferred).
  • Valid CPR certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Completed criminal background check per WV Code §18‑5‑15c and/or §18A‑3‑10.
Physical Demands

Must be able to perform essential duties, frequently reaching, standing, walking, lifting, grasping, writing, talking, hearing, seeing, and using technology such as computers. May frequently lift and/or move 50–100 pounds. Must remain free of alcohol or non‑prescribed drugs; alcohol or controlled substances that affect productivity, safety, or judgement will not be tolerated.

Compensation and Benefits

Based on the Professional Salary Schedule, Class 4, 210‑day contract, plus supplemental pay. Additional compensation available for ASL proficiency per WVSDB Communication Policy and assigned location.
