The Registered Nurse (RN) - Stepdown Unit provides specialized nursing care to patients who require a higher level of monitoring and treatment than a medical-surgical unit but do not require intensive care unit (ICU) services. This role is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care while collaborating with physicians and multidisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes. The Stepdown RN cares for patients with complex medical conditions, post-surgical needs, and those transitioning from critical care settings.
Key Responsibilities- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for patients in the Stepdown/Progressive Care Unit.
- Monitor and interpret cardiac rhythms, vital signs, and other patient data to identify changes in condition.
- Provide care for patients requiring continuous monitoring, specialized treatments, and complex nursing interventions.
- Administer medications, intravenous therapies, blood products, and other prescribed treatments.
- Utilize critical thinking and clinical judgment to respond to patient needs and emergencies.
- Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapists, case managers, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care.
- Operate and monitor specialized medical equipment, including telemetry and cardiac monitoring systems.
- Perform patient assessments and document findings accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, and discharge instructions.
- Ensure compliance with infection prevention, patient safety, and quality care standards.
- Participate in interdisciplinary rounds, care planning, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Provide emotional support and advocacy for patients and their families.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with regulatory and organizational requirements.
- Graduate of an accredited Nursing program.
- Active and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state.
- Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-acuity patient care environment.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple patient care responsibilities.
- Proficiency in electronic medical record (EMR) systems and clinical documentation.
- Previous Stepdown, Progressive Care (PCU), Telemetry, Critical Care, or Medical-Surgical nursing experience.
- Experience caring for patients with cardiac, respiratory, neurological, or post-surgical conditions.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Experience with telemetry monitoring and advanced patient assessment.
- Familiarity with evidence-based nursing practices and quality improvement initiatives.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification preferred, if required by the facility.
- Any additional certifications required by state regulations or facility policies.
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution.
- BSN preferred.
- Previous experience in Stepdown, Progressive Care, Telemetry, Critical Care, or Acute Care nursing preferred.
- Experience managing patients requiring continuous monitoring and complex clinical interventions is highly desirable.
