The Department of Medical Oncology at West Virginia University Cancer Institute is currently accepting applications for a Research Specialist Senior position.
About the Opportunity
The West Virginia University Cancer Institute invites applications for a Research Specialist Senior in the Department of Medical Oncology. This laboratory-based position will support medicinal chemistry and translational research activities within the Cancer Institute, contributing to foundational studies that advance the understanding and treatment of cancer. The role aligns with the School of Medicine’s mission of discovery and improving the health and well-being of the communities we serve.
The successful candidate will work closely with investigators, synthetic chemists in the department of pharmaceutical sciences, the Phase I clinical trials unit, translational scientists, and members of established cancer research teams. The Department of Medical Oncology maintains strong clinical, translational, and basic science programs, supported by collaborations with the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, Vaccine Development Center, and P20 Center of Biomedical Research Excellence in Tumor Microenvironment.

- Conduct laboratory-based medicinal and analytical chemistry experiments in support of drug discovery, development, and translational research projects, including studies associated with early-phase clinical trials.
- Perform experimental procedures, data collection, and data analysis under the guidance of senior researchers and faculty.
- Contribute to the preparation of research outputs, including manuscripts, abstracts, posters, and presentations.
- Assist in maintaining LC-MS, NMR, and standard synthetic equipment, protocols, and regulatory compliance.
- Provide technical support and guidance to Oncology Residents, graduate students, and other trainees as part of research and educational activities.
- Participate in research meetings, seminars, and collaborative discussions within the Cancer Institute.
- Master’s degree in chemistry or a related STEM discipline.
- A minimum of one (1) year of relevant, laboratory-based experience. No prior post graduate research experience required.
- All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.
Skills and Abilities
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively within a diverse, multidisciplinary research environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and contribute to team based scientific projects.
- Interest in developing skills in translational cancer research, synthetic, medicinal, and analytical chemistry, and cross disciplinary collaboration.
- Ph.D. is preferred.
