Position: Security Officer 3

Performs a variety of duties to provide assistance and information to all patients, visitors and staff. Enforce WVU Medicine policies and procedures to provide a safe, secure environment, in support of the Security Program.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent AND three (3) years of experience in the security field
  • OR Associate’s degree in criminal justice, criminology, forensics, law or related field of study AND one (1) year experience in the security field
  • OR Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, criminology, forensics, law or related field of study AND 6 months experience in the security field
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Obtain certification in BLS or Heart Saver First Aid within 60 days of hire date
  • State criminal background check and Federal (if applicable), as required for regulated areas
To be completed as established by department (Administered at Department level)
  • Obtain Defensive Tactics Certification
  • ACT 235 training
  • OC Spray Certification
  • Baton Certification
  • Taser User Certification
  • Obtain VA DCJS Registration within six (6) months of hire and maintain
  • Successfully pass psychological evaluation
  • Completion of the training requirements for an armed security officer
  • Completion of all departmental Lethal Weapon Training and course work
  • Handcuffing Tactics training
  • AVADE Training Levels I - III
Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited Federal, State, or Local Law Enforcement Academy
  • One (1) year experience in a healthcare security environment
Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain consistent visibility and presence at assigned locations, and provide information and directional resources for patients, visitors and staff
  • Respond to requests for information/assistance in a courteous manner
  • Provide physical assistance, wheelchair assistance, transport services, escort services and room access
  • Monitor traffic flow in parking areas and roadways; assist disabled vehicles, issue parking permits and warn of violations
  • Protect people and property by preventing accidents, theft and vandalism in accordance with policies
  • Perform routine building rounds, door unlocks, exterior building and parking lot patrol
  • Make recommendations to improve security and prevent accidents and crime
  • Report suspicious situations and incidents according to policy
  • Assist during fire and disaster drills, animal control issues, valuables transportation, and lost/found issues
  • Provide written documentation of activities and incidents in a factual manner
  • Respond to emergencies such as assaults, domestic disputes, fire, threats, theft, vehicle accidents, and disasters
  • Perform patient restraint as directed by clinical staff and participate in safe physical intervention when appropriate
  • Operate Hospital-owned vehicles safely and perform vehicle inspections
  • Perform other duties as assigned within scope of security operations
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, stand and walk for the entire shift and/or double shift
  • Ability to lift, push or pull 80 pounds
  • Ability to tolerate adverse environmental conditions for entire shift and/or double shift
Working Environment
  • May be exposed to outside weather conditions
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to perform effectively under often stressful situations
  • Good decision making and organizational skills
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to train Security Officers 1 & 2
