Compensation & Bonus
Hourly base pay $18.17 – $27.31/hour. The rate may vary based on location and candidate qualifications.
Additional compensation may include commission, incentive programs, and a $5,000 New Hire Bonus paid 50% after 30 days and 50% after 180 days.
Job SummaryCox Fleet is hiring a Shop Trailer Mechanic I. This is a dedicated on‑site shop position; emergency roadside repairs are not performed. The role includes DOT inspections, preventative maintenance, light repairs, and tasks such as aluminum & chem‑lite, trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps and engines, liftgates, brake chambers, and trailer steering systems. Advanced repairs are performed under the supervision of a Technician II or higher.
Duties- Always follows and complies with safe operating practices and procedures.
- Independently determines parts required for each job and interacts with the Shop Parts Department to obtain them.
- Maintains a clean and safe work environment.
- Assists in cleanup at the end of each day for tools, parts, and equipment.
- Applies knowledge acquired through formal training or on‑the‑job experience to perform one’s job; works with, understands, and evaluates technical information related to the job.
- Works with Service Writer to assess customer needs, provide information or assistance, resolve problems, or satisfy expectations.
- Manages concurrent assigned tasks, making effective judgments when prioritizing work‑related activities and allocating time.
- Acts with integrity, demonstrates honesty, and keeps commitments.
- Behaves consistently, keeping sensitive information confidential and adhering to ethical and professional standards.
- Performs scheduled preventative maintenance (“PM”), DOT inspections, and follow‑up repairs on light, medium and heavy‑duty vehicles in a shop environment.
- Performs routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment.
- Uses hand tools, precision instruments, trailer tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks.
- Documents according to company standards and uploads pictures of work performed, parts used, and all findings observed on Repair Orders (“RO”) using a company‑issued device and/or Karmak application.
- Accurately completes DOT forms and all other forms of documentation in a timely fashion.
- Maintains a high level of productivity and is able to work within or close to most standard repair times.
- Communicates with the Shop Manager and support team to obtain approvals on repair estimates, retrieve purchase order numbers, and discuss RO findings notes.
- Performs all work in compliance with organizational safety, health and environmental policies, and federal regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and DOT.
- Participates and completes all company‑required safety training.
- Maintains shop‑assigned service trucks, conducts safety checks, and performs daily pre/post‑trip inspections.
- Performs minor adjustments and repairs on various types of trailer equipment and systems including, but not limited to aluminum and chem‑lite, trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps and engines, liftgates, brake chambers, and trailer steering systems.
- Adheres to company policies, processes, and procedures.
- High school diploma or GED and up to two years of experience in a related field.
- Possesses and supplies a set of hand tools necessary for required job duties.
- OEM training and certifications are preferred.
- Participates in and completes all company‑required training.
- Must successfully complete and pass a DOT‑regulated pre‑employment background screening and DOT physical prior to employment.
- Must have a current and valid DOT medical card with more than four (4) months remaining until its expiration; otherwise a DOT physical is required.
- Safe driver with a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
- ASE T8 (PMI) certification – required and must be obtained within 18 months.
- ASE 608/609 certification – preferred.
- Knowledge of trailer parts and systems, including design, use, repair, and maintenance, to perform repairs or maintenance services.
