Schedule: Monday-Thursday 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This position may be on call outside of core business hours.
Compensation: Grade 8;
Salary starting at $24.15/hour
Works under the supervision of the Chief Building Official. Responsible for establishing priorities and work schedules. Executes inspections and certifications of wiring and cables for safety and National Electrical Code (NEC) compliance; inspects principal electric service entrance, rewiring, and repairs; coordinates inspections with the electric company, Housing Inspector, and Fire Department; approves and authorizes electrical service hookups; performs miscellaneous inspections of sidewalks, streets, safety measures at razed buildings and construction sites, and other inspections as needed;
responds to citizen complaints; maintains reports and records; answers inquiries regarding inspection procedures, building problems, code application requirements; provides assistance and performs various duties in the absence of regular personnel; stays current on changes and developments affecting codes and related regulations.
- Approves electrical service and authorizes power company to connect electrical power supply to any building or other service within the city.
- Inspects and certifies building sites, including proposed construction sites, footers, foundations, framing, roofing, insulation, and wiring to ensure compliance with adopted codes, City codes, and applicable State and Federal rules and regulations, and approves Certificates of Occupancy.
- Inspects switch and receptacle box placement, wiring and cables for safety and compliance with NEC, and principal electric service entrance on new construction.
- Inspects all rewiring for adequacy and safety, ensures proper repair of any faulty wiring, and inspects the principal electric service entrance and new or renovated extensions for compliance.
- Coordinates inspections and other activities with the electric company, Construction Inspector, Housing Inspector, and Fire Department.
- Performs miscellaneous inspections such as safety measures at razed building and construction sites, responds to citizen complaints involving construction obstructions, grass, brush, weeds, and other debris; checks fences to ensure right of ways and property lines.
- Completes necessary paperwork to report and record inspections, schedules inspection appointments, and answers inquiries concerning inspections, procedures, building problems, code applications, and code requirements.
- Review construction and electrical plans for code compliance; communicates with coworkers concerning coordinated inspection needs; determines applicable codes when questions arise; signs building permits.
- Stays up to date on changes and new developments affecting codes.
- Promotes an image of professional, courteous service as a representative of the City of Morgantown.
- Serves as an expert witness in court.
- Responds to emergency situations relating to the building codes, including those outside normal business hours.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Ability to prioritize and multitask.
- Read electrical plans and work with electrical contractors and developers regarding all phases of electrical work.
- Work with minimal supervision.
- Handle dissatisfied customers in person, by telephone, or email.
- Climb ladders and scaffolding.
Physical Requirements
- Frequent exposure to physically demanding, unpleasant, strenuous, and/or hazardous elements.

- Daily conditions include dirt, dust, noise, odors, fumes, and vibration while making site inspections.
- Hazardous conditions include elevated workplaces, mechanical hazards, electrical hazards, fire hazards, and hazards associated with construction sites, such as dozers, high lifts, machinery, saws, exposed electrical wiring and panels, and flammable materials.
