Position: Electrician III (Electrical Lead Technician) - Health Sciences Center

Overview

The department of Facilities Management at West Virginia University is currently seeking applications for an Electrical Lead Technician for the Health Sciences Center.

About the Opportunity

Under the direction of the Electrical Manager, this position provides leadership and direction to the electrical maintenance staff, overseeing maintenance troubleshooting, repair, and installation of various electrical systems and equipment to support the Health Sciences Center Facilities.

What You'll Do
  • Follow procedures and make work assignments for crew members, ensuring timely completion with proper quality and quantity.
  • Inspects completed work assignments of journeymen and craft workers and ensures proper safety procedures are used.
  • Supervises, assigns, and prioritizes work assignments; interfaces with Unifier CMMS, managers, administrators, trades shops, and requesting parties to finalize needs and scope of requested services.
  • Establishes work schedules and goals with employees and customers, creating efficiency and timely completion of tasks.
  • Installs, maintains, repairs, and inspects electrical circuits, conduit, surface raceways, accessories, bus ducts, and cable trays of all types, sizes, and styles.
  • Builds, installs, troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs electrical infrastructure, motors, motor controls, motor control centers, and interfaces with external equipment such as fire alarms, computers, safety devices, and programmable controls.
  • Installs, operates, inspects, and repairs high‑voltage distribution equipment inside and outside the building, and makes cable splices in underground applications, manholes, vaults, tunnels, and distribution equipment.
  • Installs, maintains, operates, and repairs emergency power systems such as generators, transfer switches, battery backup (UPS) systems, and emergency lighting.
  • Performs functional and operational testing using electronic test equipment and meters; operates equipment including motorized and hydraulic benders, wire‑pulling winches, core drills, hydraulic punching tools, portable and stationary saws, drills, vacuum and pressure‑operated systems, and utilizes truck‑mounted lift buckets.
  • Set‑ups systems, develops layouts, programs, and purchases components for fire alarm protection to support renovation projects in laboratories, large office complexes, access areas, and classrooms in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Recommends to the manager the scope of an assigned project regarding crew size, types of crafts, material availability, equipment, paperwork, and safety checks to maintain work flow and schedule.
  • Determines technical solutions based on approved standards, code requirements, plans, and user requirements; communicates directly with administrative services, customers, and warehouse personnel to complete projects with high‑quality results in a timely manner.
  • Installs conduit, wire rack, cable tray, Cat6, and other support systems for signal circuits and equipment such as PA systems, intercoms, emergency power circuits, lighting controls.
  • Installs and/or modifies necessary equipment and components such as safety devices, mechanical, programmable cabling, breaker panels, breakers, and digital controls.
  • Inspects, maintains, and repairs designated life‑safety and door access control and monitoring systems.
  • Inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs electromechanical equipment and appliances.
  • Operates departmental computer software, fills in for supervisor, assists other crafts in performance of assigned duties, and trains other individuals as assigned.
  • Requires work at heights exceeding 10 feet using ladders, scaffolds, mechanical lifts, and rooftop repairs.
  • Performs duties in response to emergency situations to meet operational needs, which may include off‑hours or short‑notice notifications.
