Position: I&E Tech Journeyman (no perdiem)

SUMMARY

Inspects, tests, adjusts, and repairs electric, electronic, mechanical, and pneumatic instruments and systems utilized by production and manufacturing equipment to ensure adherence to established performance levels and product quality.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Inspects meters, indicators, and gauges to detect abnormal fluctuations.
  • Tests accuracy of flow meters, pressure gauges, temperature indicators, controllers, radiation counters or detectors, and other recording, indicating or controlling instruments to locate defective components in systems, using test equipment such as pressure gauges, mercury manometers, potentiometers, pulse and signal generators, oscilloscopes, transistor curve tracers, ammeters, voltmeters, and watt-meters.
  • Traces out and tests electronic solid state and vacuum tube circuitry and components to locate defective parts in analog and digital, protection, or radiation monitoring systems, using test equipment, schematics, and maintenance manuals.
  • Removes defective instruments from systems, decontaminates, disassembles, and cleans instruments, and replaces defective parts using hand tools.
  • Reassembles instruments and re‑installs them in systems using hand tools.
  • Lubricates instruments and replaces defective wiring and tubing.
  • Calibrates readings on instruments according to standards and adjusts phasing to ensure accuracy of recording and indicating functions.
  • Records calibrations, parts and components used, and inventory of parts on hand.
  • Prepares schematic drawings, sketches and reports to reflect changes or alterations made in instruments.
  • Observes and complies with all safety and project rules.
  • Performs other duties as required.
JOB DESCRIPTION

Instrumentation/Electrical Technician

SUMMARY OF POSITION

Performs routine maintenance, installation, and integration of several types of process control instrumentation equipment such as transmitters, controllers, integrators, recorders, process, and analytical machinery. Performs tasks with the proper tools, including electrical/instrument tools and a Fluke meter. Makes repairs to electrical power, motor, and motor‑control circuits and must effectively communicate and speak English.

EXAMPLES OF WORK
  • Field fault analysis – determines if an instrument has failed or if it is a process problem.
  • Field calibration of instrumentation utilizing proper test equipment.
  • Complete overhaul in a shop environment to include component replacements, alignments and calibration to specifications.
  • Repair of signal transmission facilities such as tubing, wiring, etc.
  • Instrumentation including pneumatic, electronic, and digital equipment.
  • Fault analysis of hard‑wire relay logic, motor control circuits, motor power circuits (120 V to 480 V 3‑phase) and common utility / lighting circuits.
  • Installation of new control circuits, modification of existing instrument/electrical systems as requested, including design, load and implementation of new control logic.
  • Fault analysis of PLC based systems with control logic modification if required.
  • Develops, prepares, and presents recommendations and reports as requested.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Must be a high school graduate or GED equivalent and demonstrate proficiency in oral and written communication. Must be able to interpret schematic drawings (to component level) of pneumatic loops, hardware relay logic diagrams, PLC control programs, motor control circuit diagrams, etc. Must associate circuit symbols with actual components including solid‑state electronics (transistors, integrated chips, resistors, capacitors, etc.) and common industrial electrical hardware (relays, contractors, starters, etc.).

Must have good mathematical skills to include basic algebra for calculation of electrical/electronic equations. Must be able to install and bend electrical conduit of various trade sizes (PVC, EMT, rigid) and install instrumentation tubing. Must be able to analyze problems, identify solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals. Must be able to lift and maneuver 50 pounds.
