The Morristown & Morris Township Library is seeking a friendly, customer service-oriented person to join our creative and dedicated staff as the Department Head for the Reference and Adult Services Department. This position manages three full-time and three part-time reference librarians and four part-time reader’s advisors, who aid our patrons through outreach efforts, public programming, reference, technology help, and reader’s advisory.

The person in this position is a key member of our management team and also oversees adult collection development, reference and database services, and the Library website.

Do you enjoy working with the latest technology?

Our Reference and Adult Services Department provides ongoing computer, phone, tablet and other technological help for our patrons. The Department is responsible for editing much of the Library’s website, assisting with social media accounts and sending out our email newsletter. The Head of Reference and Adult Services administers the Library’s print management system and mobile printing options, is involved with our security systems, our incident reporting system and ILS development.

This Department Head also works with the Library’s Technology Specialist on a variety of projects. The person in this position follows current trends in library technology and selects new technologies of value to the Library.

Do you like shopping? Do you enjoy working with a large and diverse collection of electronic and print collection material?

The Head of Reference and Adult Services oversees all adult collection development for eBooks, fiction and non-fiction print books as well as streaming and reference database options. The Library has a collection of about 210,000 volumes, which includes strong holdings of ESOL materials, Spanish and Russian language collections, and a museum pass collection. The Library has strong readership in popular fiction and this position oversees the maintenance of the Library’s fiction collection with the Reference staff and the Reader’s Advisors.

Our library serves a diverse population and is located in the heart of historic Morristown near many cultural and historical attractions and a wide array of dining and nightlife. It is an energetic downtown with many visitors, and active Library participation amongst its residents both in person and virtually. Morris Township and Morristown are diverse communities and the Library has a commitment to supporting diversity among our staff, collections and programming.

What is the Library looking for in a candidate?

In addition to having an M.L.S. or M.L.I.S. degree and a background in the methods, practices and operations involved in a public library Reference and Adult Services department, the ideal candidate will be committed to customer service, have creative ideas and dedication to community outreach, robust collection development skills and strong leadership ability, problem solving and management skills. Candidates need a minimum of five years’ experience in the Reference or Adult Services Department of a public library and two to five years of management experience.

We are looking for someone with excellent verbal and written communication skills, experience with a variety of library software such as ILS and room reservation systems, and web-based and software-based computer programs including Canva and Excel. Fluency in Spanish is a plus as is knowledge of web editing. New Jersey residency required.
