Job Description

The Mechanical Engineer will lead the design and delivery of complex HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems for a wide variety of building projects. This role combines hands-on technical design, project management, team leadership, and client-facing responsibilities within a collaborative, full-service design/build environment. The position offers the opportunity to work on diverse and challenging projects from concept through completion while mentoring junior engineers and contributing to business development efforts.

Responsibilities

+ Lead the design of HVAC systems, including ductwork, piping, and controls, for a variety of project types across public and private sectors.

+ Perform detailed heating and cooling load calculations to ensure HVAC systems operate efficiently and comply with industry standards.

+ Design all aspects of HVAC systems, including cooling plants, chillers, heating plants, pumping systems, equipment sizing, and equipment selection.

+ Oversee multiple projects from concept to completion, ensuring adherence to budgets, timelines, and quality standards.

+ Manage and mentor a team of junior engineers by providing technical guidance, conducting performance evaluations, supporting professional development, and assigning project hours.

+ Handle project budgeting and scheduling responsibilities to keep projects on track and within scope.

+ Conduct site visits and inspections as needed to review existing conditions, monitor installation progress, and support project commissioning.

+ Participate in the design of fire protection and plumbing systems as part of broader building systems design.

+ Engage in business development activities, including attending client meetings, contributing to proposal development, and delivering sales presentations to secure new projects.

+ Ensure all designs comply with local, state, and national building codes, ASHRAE standards, and applicable energy efficiency regulations.

+ Collaborate closely with in-house architects, contractors, and other engineering disciplines to integrate HVAC and MEP solutions into overall building designs.

+ Use AutoCAD, Revit, Trane Trace, and HVAC modeling tools to develop system layouts, calculations, and detailed specifications.

+ Prepare and review technical documentation, drawings, and reports to support project delivery and client communication.

+ Maintain strong client relationships through effective communication, responsive service, and reliable technical expertise.

+ Support the full design/build project lifecycle, including coordination from initial concept through construction and project closeout.

Essential Skills

+ Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.

+ 10+ years of experience in HVAC design.

+ Proven ability to design all aspects of HVAC systems, including cooling plants, chillers, heating plants, pumping systems, equipment sizing, and equipment selection.

+ Strong proficiency in HVAC design software, including AutoCAD and Trane Trace.

+

Experience with HVAC load calculations and application of ASHRAE standards.

+ Demonstrated experience managing multiple projects simultaneously from concept through completion.

+ Experience leading, mentoring, and managing a team of junior engineering staff.

+ Proven client management experience with a demonstrated history of successful client interactions.

+ Excellent communication and negotiation skills for client meetings, proposals, and sales presentations.

+ Ability and willingness to travel to job sites as needed.

Additional

Skills & Qualifications

+ Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.

+

Experience with Revit and HVAC modeling software.

+ Background in mechanical engineering, mechanical design, and MEP design.

+ Experience in plumbing and plumbing design.

+ Experience in fire protection design and coordination.

+ Familiarity with boilers and related mechanical systems.

+ Experience working in a design/build environment with integrated architectural and engineering teams.

+ Experience using Solid Works or similar mechanical design tools is a plus.

+ Interest in ongoing professional development and pursuing professional licensure, with support available.

Work Environment

The role is based in a New Jersey office that operates as a full-service design/build firm with architects, engineers, and construction professionals working together under one roof. The team works in the office five days per week and offers flexible start times, typically between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. The environment is casual and collaborative, with a "small firm" mindset and minimal bureaucracy, despite being a well-established firm with a long history in the market.

The office supports a wide variety of project types, including public projects such as schools and municipal buildings, as well as private projects such as pharmaceutical labs, industrial facilities, and corporate offices.
