At Ports America, the Director of Corporate Engineering role is responsible for supporting and improving the equipment engineering strategy, asset management approach and overall equipment standards for all business units where Ports America has management control. In business units which Ports America has a minority stake the Director of Corporate Engineering will use all reasonable efforts to influence the engineering strategy and standards in line with Company established standards.
This role will work closely with the Maintenance, Procurement, Operations, IT and Legal departments for all equipment-related matters.
The position is responsible for supporting and improving safety and environmental standards as well as enforcement within the engineering function in conjunction with the SVP of Health, Safety and Sustainability. Finally, the Director of Engineering will work closely to align standards and objectives with all business unit heads.
Essential Duties- Direct, develop, communicate, and manage the group’s engineering strategies, performance, growth, and development needs to support overall cost and operational objectives as well as stakeholder expectations.
- Participate and lead engineering and corporate Management meetings as required and appropriate.
- Monitor, collaborate and support the equipment procurement program. Develop, refine, and implement equipment specifications and framework strategies to provide maximum cost benefits and equipment quality to Ports America.
- Function as a subject matter expert and business liaison between engineering, procurement, and other functions within the organization.
- Lead, manage, communicate, and implement Ports America engineering efficiencies, safety and environmental best practices, process improvements, cost saving initiatives, standardization in line with the group strategy, objectives, and expectations. Research for ‘continual process improvement’ initiatives and the latest technologies to support terminal operations.
- Ensure company wide conformance and compliance with established Ports America engineering and corporate policies, procedures, safety & environmental, applicable legislation and regulatory institutions as appropriate, through controlled auditing and mentoring processes.
- Support, improve and implementation of the company’s Asset Management program.
- Promote and demonstrate positive behaviors in harmony with Ports America’s values and culture.
- Ensure that the highest levels of safety are applied in all activities.
- Understand and adhere to Ports America Code of Conduct and Ethics policies.
- Travel up to 50% as directed by business need.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Maneuver on a ship, terminal yard, crane, area buildings and terminal equipment. This includes occasional stairs, ladders, height, small spaces, and proximity to rotating equipment, stored energy, deep water and large machines.
- Frequent sitting, occasional standing and walking.
- Some environments may be hazardous to persons unable to see or hear fast moving heavy equipment.
- Bachelors Degree in Engineering
- Combination of education and experience may be considered.
- 10+ years of Engineering leadership experience that has encompassed any combination of the following:
- Major capital equipment projects.
- Container terminal engineering function.
- Major engineering system implementation experience.
- Asset Management development & implementation.
- Nationally recognized engineering qualification.
- Masters in Engineering and/or M.B.A
- Ability to understand terminal operations, planning, and stevedore operations principles.
- Knowledge of the container port industry with respect to all aspects of the engineering functions, cranes, port equipment, automation, computerized maintenance system and technologies, integrated technologies, methods, and standards.
- Detailed knowledge of reliability engineering and maintenance planning programs recommended.
- Excellent computer literacy.
- Experience in stevedoring and marine terminal markets.
- Experience with industry-related labor contracts.
