Duties
- Conduct research, archival review, and onsite assessments to determine the original condition, construction methods, and architectural characteristics of historic structures.
- Develop detailed restoration and rehabilitation plans, including drawings, specifications, work sequences, and technical instructions that guide preservation and repair activities.
- Identify and evaluate period‑appropriate tools, materials, hardware, and construction techniques needed to ensure new work is consistent with historic fabric and visually compatible with cultural resource standards.
- Monitor and document project execution, ensuring work complies with approved preservation plans, building codes, and agency standards; review and approve contractor work, track progress, and oversee project budgets.
- Provide technical guidance and hands‑on instruction to craftspeople and maintenance personnel on specialized preservation techniques, historic‑period hardware systems, and appropriate repair methods for sensitive materials.
The work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing, or recurring and considerable walking, stooping, bending, crouching, and climbing such as in performing regular and periodic construction activities, field inspections, or to observe and study work operations in an industrial, storage, or comparable work area. Some light lifting of items such as books, instruments, and other similar materials may be required.
Depending on project assignments, the work may require periodic to frequent travel of up to five continuous working days and driving a motor vehicle long distance to reach remote parks.
The work is usually performed in an office setting. The work area normally involves everyday risks or discomforts requiring safety precautions typical of offices or meeting and training rooms; or may involve occasional exposure to conditions in production facilities, laboratories, or construction sites requiring normal safety precautions. Participation in safety training such as fall protection, respiratory mask fit testing, or confined space entry training, as required by individual projects may be required to allow safe and thorough assessment of existing facilities and/or new construction.

You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying possession of a valid State‑issued driver’s license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, cancelled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle.
You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State‑issued driver’s license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver’s licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
