Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey is looking for energetic, fun, organized, and caring staff to provide memorable experiences to girls in a safe and engaging Summer Camp environment!

At Jockey Hollow, there are 212 pristine acres to explore and enjoy. With a large "L"-shaped swimming pool, Low Ropes Challenge Course and Zip Line, beautiful equestrian center, archery range, playing field, and adventurous hiking trails, the fun is endless!

The Assistant Pool Director will assist the Pool Director in all aspects of managing the Pool and aquatics education program.

Responsibilities

include but are not limited to:

  • Assist the Pool Director to enforce all safety rules and regulations of the waterfront in line with Girl Scouts, ACA, ARC, and NJ Youth Camp standards.
  • Attend pre-camp training.
  • Assist in training, directing, and assisting in supervising pool staff and organizing pool programs.
  • Communicate with the Pool Director about problems, changes, and make suggestions related to waterfront activities and personnel problems/changes.
  • Integrate waterfront activities with unit plans and other specialized camp events.
  • Document and diligently report any health and welfare concerns to the Camp Health Supervisor.
  • Maintain proper camper-staff ratios according to outlined standards.
  • Conduct opening and closing site inspection of equipment, caps, buddy system, and swimming records.
  • Collaborate with Waterfront and Program Directors to plan and conduct special waterfront events.
  • Assist in conducting weekly lost swimmer rescue drills, in-service training, and staff meetings.
  • Take pre and post camp inventory of all pool equipment, providing Camp Director with requests.
  • Maintain cleanliness and order of pool and surrounding areas.
  • Keep accurate records of pool tests and report any problems immediately to the Camp Ranger.
  • Manage care and use of all pool equipment and arrange necessary repairs.
  • Maintain alertness for campers and staff in the water and their needs.
  • Must be able to lead by example when teaching swimming lessons, lifeguarding and leading activities.
  • Report any pool concerns to the Pool Director.
  • Rotate lifeguards according to Pool Director’s discretion and expertise.
  • Carry out assignments as directed by Pool Director.
  • Maintain cleanliness of pool, equipment, and surrounding areas.
  • Assist Pool and Program Directors with implementation of rainy-day programs.
  • Learn and perform emergency procedures effectively.
  • Maintain current American Red Cross swimming skill requirements, certification requirements, and documentation of related activities.
  • Promote high camper and staff morale.
  • Assist in writing and submitting a seasonal report of waterfront area and activities.
  • Understand and practice waterfront procedures, health, and safety.
  • Must be able to stay and sleep over for at least one out of the three overnights.
  • Must be able to stay at camp until the end of campfire for the overnights even if not staying for the overnight.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Daily Rate: $130 (new staff) - $140 per day (returning staff). This is based on a 7.5 hour work day, which translates to $17.33 - $18.67 per hour respectively.

Requirements
  • Must be 18+ years of age
  • Must have current and valid certifications in American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and First Aid) and Lifeguard Management. WSI certification preferred.
  • Must practice strict safety procedures while using sound judgement
  • Ability to react to emergency situations by quick movements, strenuous activity, and on occasion assist or lift persons in distress of varying weights.
  • Required to remain alert to dangerous situations while sitting, standing or walking for various lengths of time.
  • Knowledge of and ability to enforce Girl Scout, American Camp Association, DOH, and NJ Youth Camp safety procedures.
  • Must be attentive, efficient, and timely.
  • Regularly speak, read, write, interpret, and respond to words in the English language.
  • Must be able to communicate well with other staff and community partners.
  • Experience in supervision strongly preferred.
