Overview
This Opportunity Experienced senior-level project accountant providing accounting and financial specialist support to one or more Project Managers and/or project teams. Develops project work breakdown structure, project budgets, margin analysis, and creates funding in Oracle for larger and/or more complex projects. Key tasks include evaluating project charges, cost transfers, keeping Oracle data up-to-date, generating robust project accounting reporting for infrastructure/transportation/professional services projects, and advising project leadership on corrective strategies.
Collaborates with Billing and project managers on pre-billing information review, cost estimates, and invoicing. Delivers responsibilities with quality meeting or exceeding industry standards to support future-ready client solutions.
- For assigned projects, manage and analyze the collection, recording, and allocation of project costs and revenue; communicate project financial performance and profitability to project/program management.
- Own lifecycle project accounting from creating project accounts in Oracle, tracking budgets, validating invoicing, project close-out, and reconciling project payables/receivables to budgets.
- Perform detailed accounting tasks related to project contracts, billing events, and billing transaction exceptions for larger or complex projects.
- Partner with the Project Manager and team to establish and update project budgets; recommend accounting actions when contracts modify or budgets change.
- Generate project financial reports and visualizations; analyze labor breakage, cost trends, and other project-related financial reports for escalation to Project or Finance Management.
- Monitor revenue and unbilled balances to ensure proper revenue recognition.
- Authorize access to project accounts and transfer of expenses in compliance with accounting guidelines.
- Maintain QA/QC standards for project financial records using Oracle, spreadsheets, and related software.
- Investigate variances and prepare variance reports for management.
- Verify contract and change order characteristics for large/complex projects, including interpreting contract language, compensation methods, modifications, POs, and subcontract terms.
- Monitor indicators for problem projects and keep project managers informed of concerns.
- Draft and review invoices with the client-specified contract requirements; obtain signatures, finalize approvals with Project Manager/Billing, and submit invoices to clients.
- Manage subcontractors: coordinate with Contract Administrators, evaluate subcontractor invoices, maintain POs for subconsultants, and handle pay requests with Accounts Payable.
- Identify unpaid contract billings and follow up on delinquent receivables or unbilled costs.
- Respond to client requests for detail, investigate unbilled project expenses, and create/approve project billings.
- Attend or coordinate project meetings to update the team on financial status and follow up on actions.
- Create and submit government reports related to projects.
- Prepare information for internal/external auditors and respond to audit Requests as required.
- Collaborate with cross-functional finance teams (Billing, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Project Setup) on project work.
- Comply with regulatory requirements for data integrity, documentation, procedures, training, monitoring systems, and retention.
- Engage with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients professionally.
- Mentor/train other project accountants or interns; review billing and budgets for QA/QC.
- Stay current in project accounting principles and related subject matter.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds and resources; adhere to company Code of Conduct and policies.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business, or related discipline (or demonstrated equivalent experience).
- 5 to 7 years of relevant post-education experience in accounting, project contracts, and change management.
