Position: Teacher of the Visually Impaired (Full Time) - (Countywide/Union Heights)

Teacher Of The Visually Impaired (TVI)

The Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) provides direct, specialized instruction and consultative services to students who are blind, low vision, or deafblind (ages 321). The TVI assesses student needs, adapts educational materials into accessible formats (including Braille, large print, and tactile graphics), and collaborates with general and special education teams to ensure full access to the core curriculum and the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC).

Key Responsibilities

  • Assessment & Evaluation:
    Conduct Functional Vision Assessments (FVA), Learning Media Assessments (LMA), and assist with Assistive Technology evaluations to determine appropriate instructional media and accommodations.
  • IEP Development & Implementation:
    Draft measurable Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals aligned with standard curricula and ECC domains; participate actively in IEP team meetings.
  • Direct Instruction:
    Provide individual or small-group instruction in specialized skills, including Braille reading/writing, screen reader and assistive technology usage, visual efficiency, and independent living skills.
  • Instructional Adaptation:
    Transcribe and prepare educational materials into accessible formats (Braille, large print, audio, tactile maps/diagrams) prior to classroom instruction.
  • Consultation &

    Collaboration:

    Partner with general education teachers, paraprofessionals, and support staff to recommend environmental modifications and classroom accommodations.
  • Equipment & Technology Management:
    Maintain, order, and troubleshoot specialized equipment (e.g., electronic braillers, magnifiers, screen-reading software, tactile graphics displays).
  • Progress Monitoring:
    Track, document, and report student progress toward IEP goals on a regular basis to parents and administrators.

Qualifications & Certifications

  • Education:

    Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field preferred.
  • Licensure:
    Valid State Teaching Certificate with an endorsement in Visual Impairment (TVI).
  • Experience:

    Previous teaching experience with visually impaired students preferred.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

  • Travel between multiple school sites within the district as required (itinerant position).
  • Ability to lift or move specialized instructional materials and equipment weighing up to 25 lbs.
