FLSA CLASSIFICATION:
Non-exempt, hourly employee.
WORK DAYS: 261 days (including paid holidays and paid vacation time).
STANDARD HOURS PER DAY: 8 hours per day (not including a 30‑minute unpaid duty‑free meal break).
WORK YEAR:
The work year for the Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning Technician begins on the first weekday in July, and ends 12 months later on the last weekday in June.
SALARY SCHEDULE & BENEFITS:
The Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning Technician is paid on the “Maintenance, Grounds, and Skilled Trades Personnel” salary schedule, and is eligible for benefits on the “Support Staff” benefits schedule. Experience and certification levels considered.
REPORTS TO:
The Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning Technician reports to the Assistant Director of Facilities Engineering.
SUPERVISES:
The Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning Technician does not supervise any other employee(s).
Under general supervision, the HVAC Technician performs basic to semi‑skilled craft‑mechanical air conditioning systems work in various maintenance and service tasks for the school district. The HVAC Technician functions in an entry‑level capacity and performs duties within the scope of his/her abilities, with emphasis on learning from and providing assistance to other skilled trades personnel. Work areas include, but are not necessarily limited to, servicing air conditioning and refrigeration systems, treatment and testing water cooling systems, preventive maintenance on system components, and setting and adjustment of feed and flow rates.
Performs related work as directed. The HVAC Technician performs skilled, industrial‑grade air conditioning and heating systems work. This role requires advanced technical knowledge of the refrigeration cycle to diagnose, repair, and maintain complex systems across the school district, including large‑scale commercial units, chillers, and boilers.
Performs basic to semi‑skilled craft‑mechanical air conditioning, water treatment, or refrigeration systems work in various repair, maintenance and service tasks for the school district.
Assists with and/or maintains or services air conditioning, water treatment or refrigeration components, controls and systems for the district, as applicable to the assigned functional area.
Services or replaces components including, but not limited to, screens, filters, switches, controllers, sensors, lines, pressure gauges, valves.
Tests water samples for accurate levels of various chemicals and agents, when assigned to water treatment systems; sets and adjusts chemical feeds, flow rates, and pump controls accordingly.
Sets, adjusts, and/or calibrates equipment components, such as conductivity controller sensors and scales.
Performs preventive maintenance tasks according to established schedules; monitors systems functioning for the purpose of recognizing potential problems; addresses such accordingly.
Ensures compliance with and adherence to applicable codes, ordinances, building, and safety standards regarding air conditioning and water treatment service and repair activities.
Functions independently within scope of abilities, as assigned, or assists more knowledgeable and skilled technicians in more complex/difficult repairs and installations.
Fills out and maintains work orders and purchase orders for required materials, supplies and equipment; maintains daily activity logs and associated data records concerning the assigned air conditioning or water treatment system(s).
Performs necessary calculations in setting and adjustment of controls, setting feed and flow rates, measuring conductivity, and measuring pipe dimensions, line layout, angles and distances.
Performs cleaning and maintenance of equipment, tools, materials, and vehicles utilized; ensures adherence to principles and practices of safe equipment use and operation.
Responds to emergency or critical incidents in order to confine, resolve, and/or prevent environmentally hazardous conditions.
