FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Non-exempt, hourly employee.
WORK DAYS: 261 days (including paid holidays and paid vacation time).
STANDARD HOURS PER DAY: 8 hours per day (not including a 30‑minute unpaid duty‑free meal break).
WORK YEAR: The work year for the Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning (HVAC) Technician begins on the first weekday in July, and ends 12 months later on the last weekday in June.
SALARY SCHEDULE & BENEFITS: The Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning Technician is paid on the "Maintenance, Grounds, and Skilled Trades Personnel" salary schedule, and is eligible for benefits on the "Support Staff" benefits schedule. Starting hourly rate commensurate with experience.
REPORTS TO: The Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning Technician reports to the Director of Facilities and is evaluated by the Assistant Director of Building & Efficiencies.
SUPERVISES: The Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning Technician does not supervise any other employee(s).
GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIESUnder general supervision, the HVAC Technician performs skilled work on heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems across the district. This role applies advanced knowledge of the refrigeration cycle to install, maintain, diagnose, and repair complex systems, including large‑scale commercial units, chillers, and boilers. Responsibilities include servicing equipment, performing preventive maintenance, and adjusting system controls to ensure optimal performance. The HVAC Technician provides guidance to less experienced staff and performs related duties as assigned, contributing to operational efficiency, energy management, and safe learning environments.
ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS
- Perform skilled craft‑mechanical work on HVAC and refrigeration systems in various repair, maintenance, and service tasks for the school district.
- Install, maintain, and service HVAC and refrigeration components, controls, and systems, including but not limited to air handlers, condensers, evaporators, pumps, and associated piping.
- Service or replace components such as screens, filters, switches, controllers, sensors, lines, pressure gauges, and valves to ensure optimal system performance.
- Set, adjust, and calibrate equipment components, such as conductivity controllers, sensors, and scales, to maintain efficient and safe operation.
- Perform preventive maintenance according to established schedules; monitor system performance to identify potential problems and address them proactively.
- Ensure all work complies with applicable codes, ordinances, and building and safety standards related to HVAC and refrigeration.
- Respond to emergency or critical incidents involving HVAC or related systems to confine, resolve, and/or prevent hazardous conditions.
- Function independently on routine and complex assignments within the scope of training and experience, and assist or guide less experienced technicians on more difficult repairs and installations.
- Complete and maintain work orders, purchase requests, and related documentation; maintain accurate daily logs and records for assigned systems and equipment.
- Perform necessary calculations in setting and adjusting controls, feed and flow rates, measuring conductivity, and determining pipe dimensions, layout, and angles.
- Clean and maintain tools, equipment, and vehicles; follow safe work practices and proper use of personal protective equipment at all times.
- Support district operations during inclement weather by assisting with snow and ice removal, clearing debris, and performing related tasks to maintain safe access to school facilities and grounds.
- Maintain current knowledge of relevant technologies, equipment, and best practices; participate in district‑supported training to sustain skills at the level required for the position.
