Software Engineer

Lenovo is seeking an experienced Software Engineer to help define and document the serviceability tools architecture of our next generation of AI systems platforms.

In this role, you will partner with Service Architects, platform design leads, development architects, information development teams, and other engineering stakeholders to create, maintain, and improve the technical requirements and documentation needed to diagnose, service, and repair complex server systems.

The successful candidate will combine practical server hardware knowledge with strong requirements development and technical writing skills. This position requires someone who can work through incomplete or ambiguous technical information, identify gaps, and translate complex product details into clear, actionable serviceability requirements and specifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently manage assigned work, identify dependencies, and drive deliverables to completion with limited supervision.
  • Participate in design reviews, requirements reviews, readiness assessments, and cross-functional technical discussions.
  • Maintain traceability between service use cases, product requirements, design decisions, diagnostic capabilities, and published service information.
  • Evaluate the existing serviceability documentation portfolio and identify content that should be created, revised, consolidated, archived, or retired.
  • Support ISG Information Development and technical publications teams by providing engineering content, technical reviews, and subject-matter expertise.
  • Identify ambiguities, conflicting requirements, and missing technical information, and drive the appropriate stakeholders toward resolution.
  • Define requirements for hardware fault isolation, diagnostics, telemetry, event reporting, component replacement, service access, and repair verification.
  • Advocate for serviceability throughout the product-development lifecycle, from early architecture through product launch and sustaining support.
  • Review product designs and architecture proposals to identify serviceability gaps, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Translate service and problem-determination needs into clear, testable product requirements.
  • Work with platform development teams to understand server architecture, hardware components, diagnostic capabilities, failure modes, and field-service procedures.
  • Partner with Service Architects, platform design leads, hardware developers, firmware developers, and system architects to define product serviceability needs.
  • Develop detailed serviceability requirements, technical specifications, action plans, design guidance, and supporting engineering documentation for non-x86 server platforms.

Basic Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

Key Attributes

  • Comfortable working through ambiguity and incomplete information.
  • Curious and willing to investigate how complex systems operate and fail.
  • Detail-oriented without losing sight of the broader service experience.
  • Able to influence technical decisions without direct organizational authority.
  • Collaborative, accountable, and effective across engineering disciplines.
  • Proactive self-starter who identifies problems and drives practical solutions.
  • Passionate about making complex server systems easier to diagnose, maintain, and repair.

What You Will Help Deliver

Your work will help ensure that Lenovo's next-generation server platforms are designed with serviceability experiences (tools and firmware) built in from the beginning. You will enable service teams, support engineers, technicians, and customers to identify failures accurately, replace the correct component, verify repairs, and return systems to operation as efficiently as possible.

Ability to balance engineering depth, documentation quality, project schedules, and business priorities. Familiarity with structured authoring, content lifecycle management, or documentation governance. Experience working with geographically distributed engineering and technical publications teams. Familiarity with requirements management, issue-tracking, and documentation tools such as DOORS, Jira, Confluence, Git, or similar platforms. Experience participating in architecture reviews, design reviews, product-readiness reviews, or failure-analysis activities.

Understanding of Design for Serviceability, Design for Supportability, or Design for Reliability principles. Experience with server problem-determination workflows, diagnostic tools, fault-isolation procedures, or field-replaceable unit identification. Familiarity with BMCs, Redfish, system event logs, telemetry, firmware diagnostics, hardware health monitoring, or out-of-band management. Experience developing serviceability requirements for enterprise servers, rack-scale systems, or data-center infrastructure. Experience with ARM-based, GPU-accelerated, AI, high-performance computing, or other non-x86 server platforms.
