Position OverviewThe Accounting Manager supports and reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and is responsible for managing day‑to‑day accounting operations for a commercial General Contractor. This role places strong emphasis on Work‑in‑Progress (WIP) reporting, job cost accounting, percentage‑of‑completion revenue recognition (ASC 606), and preparation of audited financial statements.
The Accounting Manager partners with the CFO and Project Management teams to ensure accurate financial reporting, reliable job cost data, timely close processes, and audit‑ready financial records. The ideal candidate has hands‑on construction accounting experience and a strong understanding of financial statement preparation within a GAAP framework.
Key Responsibilities Work‑in‑Progress (WIP) & Revenue Recognition- Prepare and maintain monthly WIP schedules, including over/under billings.
- Assist the CFO with percentage‑of‑completion revenue recognition in accordance with ASC 606.
- Review job cost reports and collaborate with Project Managers on cost‑to‑complete estimates.
- Analyze gross margin fade/gain and report variances to the CFO.
- Reconcile WIP schedules to the general ledger.
- Monitor change orders, contract modifications, and retainage balances.
- Manage and assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes under the direction of the CFO.
- Prepare journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations.
- Prepare and support internal financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow).
- Assist in the preparation of annual audited financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
- Coordinate audit schedules and supporting documentation for external auditors.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and company accounting policies.
- Assist the CFO with lender, bonding, and surety reporting requirements.
- Oversee job setup, cost coding, and budget tracking.
- Monitor subcontractor accruals and committed costs.
- Review subcontractor pay applications and track retainage.
- Support project profitability analysis and forecasting.
- Provide financial analysis to support operational decision‑making.
- Assist with preparation and review of progress billings (AIA format when applicable).
- Monitor accounts receivable and support collection efforts.
- Track retainage receivable and payable.
- Support cash flow forecasting in collaboration with the CFO.
- Provide support and guidance to AP, AR, and Project Accounting staff as applicable.
- Recommend and implement improvements to accounting processes and internal controls.
- Maintain data integrity within the accounting/ERP system (e.g., Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint Vista, CMiC, Foundation, etc.).
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting (required)
- Minimum of 2 years of accounting experience, preferably in the construction industry
- Demonstrated experience with:
- Percentage‑of‑completion revenue recognition
- Job cost accounting
- Over/under billings and retainage accounting
- Financial statement preparation
- Working knowledge of GAAP
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Experience with accounting or ERP systems (construction software preferred)
- Experience supporting audited financial statements
- Exposure to bonding and surety reporting
- Experience working closely with executive leadership
- Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, financial analysis)
- Strong understanding of construction accounting principles
- Financial statement preparation and audit support capability
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail
- Strong communication skills and ability to interface with executive leadership
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a project‑driven environment
