Job Summary

The Clayton State University Department of Film, Communication, and Performing Arts seeks a part- time Instructor of Music with a focus on commercial voice and music drama. The start date for this position is August 2, 2026. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in commercial voice, classical voice, musical theatre performance, and related areas, while fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment for students pursuing careers in contemporary vocal performance and music drama.

Responsibilities

* Teach courses and private lessons in commercial voice, including styles such as pop, gospel, R&B, and musical theatre.

* Instruct music drama and musical theatre performance, including acting through song and stage presence, for students in all forms of music drama, including opera, operetta, musical theatre, cabaret, and contemporary formats.

* Provide individualized vocal lessons and mentorship to students

* Develop and update course materials to reflect current industry practices

* Participate in student performances, juries, and departmental events as appropriate

* Maintain regular office hours and communicate effectively with students

Required Qualifications

* Graduate degree or a minimum of 40 graduate credit hours in vocal performance, musical theatre, or a related field

* Demonstrated experience in commercial voice and/or music drama performance

* Experience directing or staging music drama productions

* Strong understanding of contemporary vocal techniques and industry standards

* Excellent communication and collaborative skills

Preferred Qualifications

* Ability to teach classical singing technique and style to applied voice students in addition to commercial styles

* Prior teaching experience at the collegiate or professional level

* Active professional career in commercial music or musical theatre

* Ability to teach additional courses in related areas (e.g., audition techniques, vocal pedagogy, or performance workshops)
