Job Title
Provides one-on-one academic support to exceptional education students (including those with functional and/or mild intellectual disabilities) at the elementary level. Under general supervision serves as a support to the assigned classroom teacher or instructional area in providing educational opportunities for each student within various disciplines.
Key responsibilities include providing one-on-one support to selected students in resource, self-contained, and regular classroom settings. Conducts small group or individual classroom activities with students based on lesson plans developed by the teacher. Assists with preparation of materials for instruction (including the copying/duplicating of materials, construction of bulletin boards, grading work, etc.). Performs special duties as required for meeting the unique needs of specific student populations;
e.g., lifting physically disabled students, toileting/personal hygiene assistance, using physical restraints or other specialized behavior management techniques. Assists with routine record keeping, housekeeping; assists with school-wide supervision such as loading/unloading buses.
Key job requirements include holding an associate's degree or higher in any subject from a GaPSC-accepted accredited institution. Alternatively, two (2) years of college coursework (sixty [60] semester hours or [90] quarter hours) above the remedial level with a grade of "C" or better at a GaPSC-accepted accredited institution is required. Or, passing the GACE Paraprofessional Assessment and holding a minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
Paraprofessional experience serving school age children is desirable. Bilingual or bicultural experience required for certain positions. Must hold or be eligible for a GaPSC-issued Paraprofessional License. The Certification Team will apply for the Paraprofessional License upon hire.

Training and/or experience in special needs of disabled populations such as first aid, ability to perform a two person lift for students as needed, or behavior management preferred.
Light duty - On most occasions sitting at a desk or table; intermittent sitting, standing, or stooping. Moderate lifting or carrying; fifty (50) lbs. or less.
Note:
This is a grade 16, 190-day position that starts at a step 6 and pays for experience up to a step 8.
