The City of Danbury is announcing an Open Competitive Exam for the position of

Maintenance Mechanic III - General/Carpentry

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
:

This is skilled and semi-skilled trades work and supervisory work in the maintenance, repair and alteration work of buildings and equipment.

Responsibilities
  • Constructs, repairs and maintains wooden structures, such as case work, cabinetry, furniture, partitions, walls, ceilings, roofs and other parts of City-owned buildings or structures, using hand and/or related power tools.
  • Reviews blueprints and field measurements to determine procedures of construction (including casework or cabinet work).
  • Estimates cost and quantity of materials.
  • Builds or assembles items using wood, metal or associated materials.
  • Varnishes, stains, paints, etc. as needed.
  • Builds and installs partitions or walls.
  • Repairs partitions, doors, windows, floors, furniture, ceilings, etc.
  • Installs doors, frames, locks, closures and other related hardware.
  • Constructs or installs furniture or furnishings as needed.
  • Performs building maintenance and alteration work.
  • Performs minor plumbing, electrical and HVAC maintenance tasks.
  • Paites equipment and building, repairs masonry work.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Requisition s parts and materials.
  • Performs snow removal operations as required.
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

Knowledge/Abilities/

Skills:

Some knowledge of electrical, plumbing and mechanical work. Some knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools and materials of the carpentry, painting and masonry trades. Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade including city and state codes; ability to work from sketches, plans and to understand and effectively follow oral and written instructions. Skill in the use of tools, materials and equipment common to the trades.

Ability to direct the activities of other employees within the class or related classes.

Education, Experience, Training:

  • High school graduate, technical/ trade school diploma or equivalent educational training.
  • Must possess a Valid Driver’s License.
  • Five years’ experience in carpentry work and/or general building maintenance; school/municipality experience preferred.

Shall possess or acquire a State of Connecticut General Contractors license within 1 year of employment.

Supervision Received

Receives work assignments from the Superintendent or Foreman.

Examination and Eligibility
  • Application Review — The Civil Service Commission is responsible for reviewing the applications to determine if they are complete and meet the minimum requirements for the position. The Commission will review all the applications for the position during their bi-weekly meetings following the closing date of the position.
  • Testing — Once an application is accepted by the Civil Service Commission, the applicant will be notified in writing of the next steps in the testing process. Each test phase must be passed in order to continue to the next level of the selection process. The examination for this position will consist of the following parts:
