Duties

JOB GOAL:
To assist the teacher with teaching objectives by working with individual students or small groups to help them reach the same skill levels as the class as a whole.

The Multilingual Learner (MLL) Teacher will provide high-quality English language development instruction (both receptive and expressive) to students from diverse linguistic backgrounds. The ideal candidate will implement a curriculum that parallels grade-level content while aligning with the Illinois Learning Standards and the WIDA English Language Proficiency Standards. This educator will collaborate with general education teachers, special education teachers, and support the overall academic and social-emotional growth of our multilingual students.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

* Instructional Delivery:

* Provide targeted English language proficiency instruction in content areas and language arts, tailored to students' individual language proficiency levels.

* Utilize high-impact language acquisition strategies (such as SIOP, scaffolding, and visual aids) to make abstract concepts accessible.

* Deliver small group and individualized instruction to address specific language gaps in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

* Incorporate digital learning tools and assistive technologies to enhance language production and student engagement.

* Assessment & Placement:

* Administer individual language proficiency assessments for initial placement and annual progress monitoring (e.g., ACCESS for ELLs) to guide instructional decisions.

* Analyze formative and summative assessment data to track linguistic growth and adjust instructional groupings accordingly.

* Maintain accurate, compliant student data records and portfolios to document language development milestones.

* Share assessment results and growth trajectories with teachers, administrators, and parents in an accessible format.

* Curriculum Alignment:

* Design and deliver lessons that align with the Illinois Learning Standards and the WIDA framework, ensuring MLLs have equitable access to the core curriculum.

* Integrate the WIDA English Language Development (ELD) Standards Statements seamlessly into daily content-area lesson planning.

* Regularly review and select culturally authentic, level-appropriate literature and resources that reflect the students' backgrounds.

* Differentiate grade-level curriculum objectives so that MLLs can meet rigorous academic expectations without lowering performance standards.

* Collaboration & Co-Teaching:

* Partner with general education classroom teachers to share instructional strategies, modify materials, and co-plan lessons that support MLLs in the mainstream classroom.

* Model best practices for scaffolding instruction and modifying assessments during collaborative planning periods.

* Participate actively in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) meetings to advocate for MLL student needs.

* Provide continuous feedback to school staff regarding the socio-emotional and academic adjustments of multilingual learners.

* Family & Community Engagement:

* Serve as a bridge between the school and families, fostering a welcoming environment that values individual and cultural diversity.

* Communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress and community resources, utilizing translation services when necessary.

* Actively promote a school culture that celebrates bilingualism and biliteracy as valuable academic assets.

* Collaborate with the MLL Department to plan, organize, and participate in two designated family nights per school year to promote community connection and student success.

* Design engaging, interactive workshops during family nights that empower parents to support language development and learning at home.

* Partner with community organizations and local stakeholders to secure resources and guest speakers for departmental events.

* Evaluate the effectiveness of family engagement initiatives through feedback collection to improve future district outreach.
