Position Overview:

The Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS) reports to the Senior Associate AD for Internal Operations and Academics. SASS is an integral part of student-athlete retention and graduation efforts. This position is responsible for the overall leadership and oversight for all functional areas of the SASS program at the University of Idaho. The Assistant AD for SASS provides leadership in implementing best practices and seeking innovative approaches for student-athlete academic support and academic advising, while cultivating the intellectual and career interests of the student-athletes served.

The position spearheads the successful development and application of department policies and procedures to ensure compliance with NCAA, conference, and University rules and regulations. This applies to policies and procedures as they pertain to student-athlete academic progress toward degree. The incumbent will be a member of the Athletics leadership team, to provide updates and coordinate with coaching and other Athletics staff regarding student-athlete academic success.

Duties may include:

  • Hire, train, supervise and evaluate professional staff and graduate assistants
  • Budget planning and management
  • Annual report preparations
  • Collaborate with other Academic Support Programs (ASP) units, the Associate Athletic Director of NCAA Compliance, and campus partners to provide excellent service to student-athletes
  • Guide the development and implementation of the University/unit vision and goals
  • Coordinate data collection for program assessment and evaluation
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Qualifications

Required Experience:

Two years administering NCAA Division I rules and regulations associated with academic eligibility and certification;
Two years administering student-athlete academic support services;
One year of supervisory experience;
Maintaining computerized student-athlete records;
Collaborating and working effectively with student-athletes, coaches, campus partners and university administration

Required

Education:

Master's degree in education, counseling, sport administration or a related field; or at least five years of progressively responsible experience in student support services, advising, or related functions to this position

Required Other:
Must be eligible for and maintain appropriate organizational memberships;
Ability to travel;
Ability to work nonstandard business hours which may include evenings, weekends and holidays

Additional Preferred:

Education:

Doctoral degree in counseling, education, sport administration or other related area;

Experience:

Experience with coordinating and directing learning assistance programs for student-athletes;
Experience with academic advising for undergraduate students;
Teaching experience in higher education;
Experience developing technical written materials such as policies, manuals or rules/regulations;
Work experience that demonstrates strong time management, excellent written and verbal communication and strong organizational skills;
Demonstrated experience executing the day-to-day operations of providing high-quality academic support for student-athletes;
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
Understanding of NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) and Graduation Success Rate (GSR) reporting;
Working knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations related to transfer student-athletes;
Familiarity with academic assessment tools, current research and learning strategies
