NORTHWEST NAZARENE UNIVERSITYTEACHING & LEARNING CENTERTeaching & Learning Specialist Description of Position

The Teaching & Learning Specialist supports faculty in strengthening teaching and student learning through instructional coaching, consultation, classroom observation, and faculty development. The specialist partners with faculty to implement effective teaching practices, strengthen course design, integrate Christian faith and learning, and thoughtfully use technology to support student learning.

Essential Functions
  • Provides individual and small-group instructional coaching, consultation, and mentoring to faculty to strengthen teaching effectiveness and student learning.
  • Conducts formative classroom observations and provides supportive, non-evaluative feedback aligned with faculty-identifiedteaching goals.
  • Designs, facilitates, and assesses faculty development programming focused on effective teaching practices, including activelearning, student engagement, and faith and learning integration.
  • Guides faculty in effective course design, including measurable learning outcomes, alignment of learning activities and assessments, scaffolding, and accessible instructional practices.
  • Supports faculty in intentionally integrating Christian faith and learning into course design, teaching practices, and student learning experiences in alignment with the University's mission.
  • Supports faculty in selecting and using instructional technologies that advance teaching and learning, with particular emphasis on Canvas, artificial intelligence, and interactive learning tools.
  • Collaborates with the Director of the Teaching & Learning Center and other TLC staff to identify faculty development needs and develop resources, programs, and initiatives that address those needs.
  • Responds to and appropriately routes faculty requests for teaching, course design, Canvas, and instructional technology assistance.
  • Supervises assigned TLC technical assistants and coordinates related course-improvement projects, including accessibility compliance.
  • Stays current with research, emerging practices, and technologies related to teaching, learning, faculty development, and higher education.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements

Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in education, curriculum and instruction, adult learning, educational leadership, instructional design, educational technology, or a related field.
  • Two years of experience in teaching, faculty development, instructional coaching, curriculum/course development, or a related educational role.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective teaching practices, including active learning, student engagement, assessment, learning outcomes, and instructional alignment.
  • Experience facilitating professional development, workshops, consultations, coaching, or other learning experiences for adult learners.
  • Ability to establish collaborative, supportive, and non-evaluative relationships with faculty and communicate instructional expertise with confidence and professionalism.
  • Demonstrated comfort learning and using instructional technologies and the ability to connect technology use to instructional goals.
  • Ability to support faculty in thoughtfully integrating Christian faith and learning within diverse disciplines and teaching contexts.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, facilitation, and organizational skills.
  • The University requires that all staff members be Christians (preferably in the Wesleyan tradition) and must be comfortable with and in agreement with the mission and lifestyle values of NNU and be willing to help advance the spiritual goals of the University.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • College or university teaching experience, particularly in face-to-face learning environments.
  • Experience providing instructional coaching, classroom observation, or formative teaching feedback to educators.
  • Experience designing and facilitating faculty or professional development programs.
  • Experience with course or curriculum design, including learning outcomes, alignment, assessment, and scaffolding.
  • Experience with Canvas or another learning management system.
  • Experience supporting faculty use of artificial intelligence, interactive learning technologies, or other emerging instructional technologies.
