The Academic Retention Specialist will provide direct service to students using the Tribal Nations Student Affairs (TNSA) office who require extensive academic support. This position will assist with managing the Indigenous Scholars Training for Excellence Program (INSTEP). The TNSA Academic Retention Specialist is expected to work closely with the staff in the University Advising Services, Student Support Services, Counseling and Testing Center, and other departments to provide the support services needed for the retention and completion of the student’s undergraduate degree.

This position facilitates workshops, support groups and orientation activities and completes other duties as assigned by the Tribal Nations Student Affairs Director.

General responsibilities
  • Meeting students on a regular basis to monitor academic progress
  • Assessing and coordinating academic tutoring opportunities for students
  • Overseeing daily study tables
  • Guiding and mentoring students in exploration of their choice of majors and coursework
  • Advising and mentoring students on personal, financial, social, tribal and academic related matters
  • Researching scholarship and internship opportunities
  • Co-teaching the TNSA Fall seminar course
  • Collaborating with university resources and personnel to provide students with comprehensive and appropriate services
  • Working with Indigenous populations in higher education or student service programs
  • One year working with students in a mentoring, advising, or other college level academic support role
  • Using a computer for word processing, email, calendar management and internet searches
  • Maintaining a high level of confidentiality
Required Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to meet UI requirement for driving university vehicles
  • Ability to work nonstandard hours including evenings and weekends
  • Ability to travel for academic programming and professional development including overnight stays
Additional Preferred
  • Demonstrated experience of program development and implementation on college success strategies
  • Demonstrated experience working with Tribal populations
  • Ability to interface professionally with departments, staff, faculty and students
  • Capacity to manage a variety of projects simultaneously
