Responsible for managing all operations of a research and teaching sheep unit, including personnel supervision, budget oversight, animal care operations, regulatory compliance and support of research, teaching and outreach activities.

Responsibilities
  • Supervising, training, evaluating and scheduling board‑appointed and temporary employees
  • Managing daily sheep unit operations and ensuring compliance with established standard operating procedures
  • Developing, updating and enforcing operational protocols related to animal care, facility management and unit activities
  • Managing unit budgets and expenditures and monitoring financial performance to maintain balanced budgets
  • Coordinating with unit, center and departmental leadership on operational planning, resource allocation and fiscal management
  • Providing management support and operational coverage for other animal units and assisting with research center activities as needed
  • Two years of handling and working with large animals
  • Using computerized record‑keeping systems
  • Applying basic research principles
  • Maintaining records and budget information
  • Preparing written reports, correspondence or other business documents
  • Supervising and training employees
Required Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science, Agriculture or a related field at time of hire
Required Other
  • Ability to work non‑standard hours including early mornings, late nights, weekends and holidays
  • Driver’s license and ability to meet requirements for driving university vehicles
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Animal Science or a closely related field
  • Experience supporting research involving sheep management, health, reproduction or nutrition
  • Experience applying sanitation procedures in livestock care operations
  • Knowledge of safety practices related to handling livestock, farm equipment, and vehicles
  • Experience operating skid‑steer loaders and tractors
  • Experience loading, towing and transporting livestock trailers
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Able to handle and restrain large animals
  • Able to hand‑feed animals
  • Ability to lift, carry, or otherwise move items weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions
Compensation

Pay Range: $71,760 annually or higher depending on experience.

Visa sponsorship is available for the position.

Full time, 1.0 FTE.
