Basic Function
The Street Maintenance Worker is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and repair of city infrastructure, including streets, alleys, sidewalks, structures, streetlights, traffic signals, fiber optic networks, and related facilities. The role involves routine maintenance to emergency response, operating equipment, adhering to safety protocols, and communicating effectively with team members and the public.
Essential Functions- Act as the Responsible Person while on call.
- Investigate customer complaints of street problems and resolve them promptly.
- Perform repair and maintenance activities to ensure safe, effective operations in compliance with all applicable rules and regulations.
- Monitor stock levels of repair and maintenance parts and supplies, reorder materials as required.
- Perform yard maintenance, maintain equipment, and manage material stockpiles.
- Respond to Public Works emergencies after hours as needed.
- Install and remove large and small banners.
- Ensure MUTCD compliance of all roadway signage and temporary traffic control work zones.
Apprentice: Entry‑level position performing duties under direct supervision.
Journey: Specialized in operating, maintaining, and repairing city street systems with limited need for instruction and full awareness of operating procedures.
Senior: Technically advanced, may lead tasks in specific areas, serve as responsible party on job sites, and conduct troubleshooting to identify and remedy problems.
