Para educator Life Skills @ Frontier Middle School

Position:
Para educator – Life Skills. The role involves providing specialized instruction and support to students with behavioral challenges in both Special Education and General Education settings.
- Work closely with the student’s case manager and school nurse to ensure medical needs are addressed in alignment with the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) and healthcare plan, maintaining open, consistent communication among team members.
- Perform delegated medical tasks under the direction of the school nurse, including supporting seizure management protocols, assisting with catheterization, monitoring diabetes care, and carrying out other healthcare tasks as specified in the student’s medical plan.
- Assist the teacher in following lesson plans, providing support in academic subjects and self‑help skills, helping students with reading, mathematics, writing, and preparing/assembling teaching materials.
- Supervise students during both academic and non‑academic activities, ensuring a safe learning environment and monitoring behavior.
- Implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs), applying behavior management strategies and de‑escalation techniques, including therapeutic holds when necessary, to support student safety and development.
- Assist in the implementation of daily instructional lessons, including administering tests, evaluating student progress, and modifying student work; prepare teaching materials and help organize classroom activities.
- Maintain accurately recorded logs of medical tasks, student behavior, and academic performance, updating the appropriate staff and ensuring confidentiality of student records.
- Manage student safety during all school activities, monitoring physical well‑being, enforcing school rules, and maintaining constant vigilance during movement across the campus.
- Demonstrate professionalism and adaptability by responding to changes in location, schedule, or duties; maintain punctuality and enter absences in the district system promptly.
- Participate in regular training sessions, staff meetings, and in‑service workshops to stay informed on medical procedures, behavior management strategies, and instructional practices, maintaining a district‑assigned email account.
- Assume additional responsibilities as needed, including cooperating with the teaching team and providing support for the student’s healthcare and educational plan with minimal supervision.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least 72 college‑level credits from an accredited institution, a college degree, or a passing score on the Educational Testing Service (ETS) Assessment – or the ability to take the Para educator Assessment.
- Experience working with students in individual and small‑group instructional settings, as well as in classroom environments.
- Working knowledge of educational fundamentals and experience with the current curriculum (preferred).
- Proven ability to complete tasks efficiently in a fast‑paced environment.
- Capacity to manage large groups of students in an unstructured environment while maintaining high safety standards.
- Reliable record of punctuality and consistent attendance.
- Willingness and ability to assist students with personal management tasks such as toileting, changing, eating, and other personal hygiene.
- Federal and Washington State criminal history clearance, with fingerprinting cost borne by the employee.
- Completion of required Safe Schools trainings.
- Current CPR/First Aid certification.
- Current Safety Care certification.
- Within the first year of employment, successful completion of the Washington State Fundamental Course of Study for Paraeducators as defined in RCW 28A.413.070, and ongoing compliance with future state requirements.
