Job Description TERMS OF EMPLOYMENTClassified Salary Range
BENEFITS AVAILABLE6.50 hours per day, 180 days per year
Shift time: M-F 8:45-3:45
Shift time is subject to building needs.
PARA educator SpecialistCoordinates activities or performs specialized duties to assist in providing instruction to and supervision of students in a variety of instructional and non-instructional programs. Includes, but is not limited to, the following specialized duties:
- ELL/Migrant Instruction and Translation Services
- Health Room
- Computer Lab and Technology Support
- Special Education Resource and Life Essentials
If you do not have the minimum college credits for this position, you may take the Para educator Assessment. Complete this form if you'd like to be scheduled for the assessment.
- High school diploma or GED and a minimum of 72 college quarter credits from a nationally accredited institution or ETS test required.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Accurate and efficient at completing tasks on time without constant or direct supervision.
- Positive relationship with students, parents, and staff/teachers or supervisory staff.
- Work effectively with small groups or individual students under the supervision of certificated staff.
- Accurately keep records.
- Willing to respond with compassion to a student needing assistance with personal care, including verbally coaching students through such situations.
- Meet performance expectations as outlined in MLSD #161 Classified Employee Performance Evaluation.
- Always punctual. If absences are required, inform the supervisor early enough so that normal workflow is not interrupted.
- Well‑groomed and has a neat and clean appearance. Dresses appropriately for the job assignment.
- Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
- Promptly and accurately follow specific instructions, and perform duties with a positive attitude.
- Follow a duty schedule as assigned.
- Follow prescribed behavior plans as assigned.
- Apply appropriate discipline according to district procedures and behavior plans.
- Work independently and solve problems with minimal supervision.
- Work well with special needs children individually or in small groups to communicate appropriate learning objectives as outlined in their individualized educational program (IEP) under the supervision of certified staff.
- Build a positive relationship with special needs students.
- Encourage special needs students to develop positive relationships with their peers.
- Willing to receive Non‑violent Crisis Intervention and Non‑violent Restraint training.
- Effectively intervene and control students when they are out of control (e.g. fighting, acting out, having tantrums, etc.) by using appropriate restraining methods approved by the district.
- Receive training to gain an understanding of specific disabilities.
- Responsibly supervise special needs students in the classroom.
- Responsible for the supervision of special needs students upon arrival and departure from school.
- Monitor activities to ensure safety and compliance with school rules.
- Willingness to provide emergency first aid as necessary.
- Willingness to obtain or possess a current First Aid card required.
- Physical ability to perform required duties.
- Willingness to receive training in crisis intervention and/or restraining techniques, and use those skills as determined by certified staff.
- Willingness to assist with medically fragile children.
- Willingness to work with students with behavior difficulties.
- Maintain excellent attendance.
- Maintain district assigned email; reading and responding to messages daily.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Criminal history clearance through Washington State Patrol and FBI.
