GENERAL SUMMARY
The district Multilingual Specialist will instruct students in English language development, and work directly with the building Multilingual Team to provide evidence‑based instruction.
The ideal candidate is a student liaison who works to ensure equity, has experience with evidence‑based English language strategies, excellent organizational and communication skills, is compassionate, willing to collaborate, and knowledgeable about current research in second‑language acquisition and EL education. The candidate should also be sensitive to developmental stages and be flexible in teaching assignments within the high school setting.
QUALIFICATIONS/PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Valid Washington State Teacher certificate and English Language Learner endorsement; or coursework that meets WAC requirements or demonstrated commitment to obtaining the required endorsement.
- Minimum of three (3) years teaching experience and a comprehensive understanding of language acquisition.
- Experience, knowledge, and skill working with English Language Development standards.
- Deep understanding of evidence‑based strategies, progress monitoring, and assessments for English Language Development. Ability to use assessment results to drive instruction and demonstrate student growth.
- Track record of being a flexible team player, student‑focused, and community‑minded.
- Fluency in spoken and written Spanish desired but not required.
- Alternatives to the above qualifications as the district may find appropriate and acceptable.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Teach multiple classes and language levels to meet the needs of multilingual students at Moses Lake High School.
- Screen multilingual learners according to district, state, and federal laws and policies.
- Progress monitor, analyze data, and use results to drive instructional goals for individual students.
- Advocate best practices in ELD and program growth, leading to transitional bilingual and dual‑language opportunities.
- Collaboratively develop, implement, and articulate written plans of action for English language development curricula aligned to WIDA ELD standards.
- Collaborate with counselors, building leadership, and district multilingual support staff to evaluate programming and determine placement for multilingual students.
- Provide stakeholders with student profiles including language proficiency, supports, progress monitoring, and assessment scores.
- Employ a variety of language acquisition instructional techniques and teaching strategies to meet different aptitudes and interests (whole group co‑teaching, small‑group, or individual learning).
- Provide instructional planning, guidance, and appropriate materials to para educators within the program.
- Establish and maintain communication with parents, including quarterly progress reports.
- Engage parents and families in student learning and act as an ambassador for the school in the community.
- Protect and honor scheduled ELD time for multilingual learners.
- Communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and community.
- Work cooperatively with district and building staff and students.
- Attend IEP, Section 504, and other related meetings necessary for student assessment and compliance.
- Serve on the building RTI/MTSS team as a multilingual learner liaison.
- Attend district multilingual support specialist PLC meetings, professional development, and assigned meetings.
- Track and monitor Native American and migrant students, including those who may not qualify for multilingual services.
- Collaborate with the District Teaching and Learning Department and District Federal Program Assistant.
- Demonstrate commitment to MLSD’s Mission, Vision, and Core Principles.
- Other duties as assigned.
