POSITION OVERVIEW
The Elementary Physical Education Teacher provides a comprehensive, engaging, and developmentally appropriate physical education program for students in grades PreK–5. This position promotes physical fitness, motor skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, healthy lifestyles, and lifelong wellness habits through standards‑based instruction and active participation. The teacher creates a safe, inclusive, and positive learning environment where all students are encouraged to develop confidence, cooperation, self‑discipline, and personal responsibility.
The position requires the ability to differentiate instruction and activities to meet the diverse academic, social, emotional, behavioral, and physical needs of students while utilizing research‑based instructional and assessment practices. The teacher collaborates with classroom teachers, specialists, administrators, families, and support staff to support student growth. The teacher contributes positively to school culture through participation in professional learning communities, school improvement efforts, wellness initiatives, and site‑based decision‑making processes.
The teacher may also assist with school‑wide wellness programs, field day activities, safety instruction, and the promotion of healthy and active lifestyles across the school community.
Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Elementary Education, or related field;
Master’s degree preferred. - Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate.
- Washington State endorsement in Health and Fitness/Physical Education required.
- Elementary Education endorsement preferred.
- Demonstrated understanding of research‑based instructional strategies and assessment practices that support effective instruction.
- Alternatives to the above qualifications as the district finds appropriate and acceptable.
- Teach physical education to elementary students with a wide range of abilities and needs.
- Knowledge of age‑appropriate physical education curriculum, motor skill development, movement concepts, fitness education, and health‑related activities.
- Ability to teach and model sportsmanship, teamwork, cooperation, safety, and lifelong fitness habits.
- Understanding of child development and effective instructional strategies for elementary learners.
- Knowledge of Washington State learning standards and instructional best practices.
- Differentiate instruction and modify activities to support students with varying needs.
- Establish and maintain a safe, structured, respectful, and inclusive learning environment.
- Knowledge of appropriate safety procedures, equipment usage, supervision practices, and injury prevention strategies.
- Classroom and behavior management skills appropriate for active learning environments.
- Integrate physical education instruction with broader academic and social‑emotional learning goals.
- Use assessment data to monitor student progress and modify instruction appropriately.
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing with students, staff, families, and community members.
- Organizational skills and commitment to follow through on responsibilities and tasks.
- Use technology and digital resources to enhance student learning and instructional effectiveness.
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues, administrators, counselors, specialists, para educators, and support staff.
- Commitment to shared decision‑making, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding students, staff, and district information.
- Bilingual skills preferred.
- Excellent attendance and reliability.
- Plan and deliver engaging, standards‑aligned physical education instruction for grades PreK–5.
