The Development & Communications Intern provides hands-on support to Samaritan Healthcare's Volunteer and Community Outreach programs while gaining exposure to philanthropic development and organizational communications in a healthcare setting. This position works directly with the Community Outreach Specialist to support the daily coordination and administration of Samaritan's Volunteer Program, including volunteer scheduling, communication, and engagement activities.
In collaboration with the Development & Communications team, the intern also assists with broader outreach initiatives, including event preparation, brand support, and participation in community engagement efforts that advance Samaritan Healthcare's mission.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
* Education:
* Bachelor's or Associates Degree in communications, marketing, public relations, advertising or related field preferred. Or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
* Certification:
* Basic Life Support Heartsaver (HS) level to be completed within three (3) months of hire.
* Experience:
* Minimum two to three years' experience in a professional office setting preferred.
* Knowledge and expertise of publishing programs preferred.
* Skills/
Competencies:
* Interest in nonprofit development, communications, or community engagement
* Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace; experience with Canva, Constant Contact, or CRM software is a plus.
* Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
* Positive attitude and willingness to learn.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Samaritan Volunteer Program:
* Under the guidance of the Community Outreach Specialist, internship directly supports the daily operations and planning for the Samaritan Volunteer Program as well as the organization's Community Engagement efforts.
* Assists in the creation and support of weekly volunteer schedule, including the management and tracking of timesheets within trackitforward. Internship also works directly with the Samaritan Accounting team to reconcile monthly tracking of all volunteer hours.
* Assists Community Outreach Specialist with Samaritan Volunteer Program management including but not limited to updating volunteer records, processing new volunteer applications, background check certifications, and partners with Dev Comm team to facilitate volunteer orientation process.
* Collaborate with the Community Outreach Specialist to support planning and preparation for the Samaritan Student Volunteer Program, including reviewing previous volunteer rotations, confirming departmental participation with Samaritan leaders, and coordinating the distribution of application materials to regional educational partners.
* Facilitate the interview process for Summer Student Volunteer program, including selection communication to applicants and confirmation of rotations per session.
* Assist the Community Outreach Specialist in planning Volunteer Appreciation Week activities, including daily recognition of on-site volunteers, annual recognition luncheon, and celebrations on social media.
* In partnership with the Community Outreach Specialist and Samaritan Clinical Leaders, work with team to research and propose a program outline for the Patient Ambassador Program.
* Serves as daily liaison between scheduled gift shop volunteers and Foundation Operations team.
* Assist in the creation of monthly volunteer newsletter.
Samaritan Community Outreach:
* In partnership with Marketing, support the organization's Community Outreach Efforts, helping prepare branded materials and scheduled volunteers for community events as needed.
* Provide support to the Development & Communications team for promotional brand ordering and organization of supplies as needed for outreach efforts.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
* On occasion, moderate physical effort required. Must be able to lift/carry up to 25 lbs.
* Mostly sedentary work with light physical effort. Good reading eyesight.
* Ability/endurance to stand/walk for prolonged, extensive or considerable time.
* Occasional reaching/stooping/bending/kneeling/crouching.
* Able to work flexible hours as necessary to complete tasks on deadline.
* Ability to communicate using verbal and/or written skills for accurate exchange of information with physicians, nurses, health care professionals, patients and/or family, and the public.
