Job Description

The security officer plays a crucial role in maintaining a positive school environment by enforcing school regulations and maintaining order inside and outside a school building. The position provides support for after-hours, extra-curricular activities/events at assigned buildings and all district-sponsored events, including Lion’s Field, and a variety of assistance to students and staff.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain professional appearance and demeanor; demonstrate respect and courtesy to students, staff, and parents.
  • Visibly patrol building and parking lot premises; monitor locker rooms, bathrooms, hallways, grounds and adjacent areas.
  • Ensure students are not wandering halls during class, assemblies, and parking lots or loitering in restrooms.
  • Provide security services after hours and at extra-curricular activities/events; sign up for events in advance and cover unfilled assignments as directed.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and parents.
  • Gather data on incidents; prepare reports and related documentation; refer cases to appropriate authorities.
  • Work with school administrators and law enforcement officials in handling serious student offenses and legal violations.
  • Respond to emergencies, security concerns; detain and report unauthorized persons per district and school procedures.
  • Assist administrators and staff in crisis and emergency situations and with emergency drills; supervise and direct pupil movement.
  • Ensure knowledge of current security procedures and implement them in regular duties.
  • Locate students when requested by school administration.
  • Direct visitors to the school office; provide assistance as necessary.
  • Maintain consistent presence at assigned worksite and regular work hours; observe punctuality and excellent attendance.
  • Use camera system and two-way radios in duties.
  • Work with custodians when appropriate.
  • Attend and successfully complete all staff development training as required by state law or district directives, including Public School Safety and Security Training, Safety Care, and annual Safe Schools.
  • Obtain a CPR and First Aid Card.
  • Maintain district-assigned email account; read and respond to messages in a timely manner.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.; higher education preferred.
  • Experience and training in a related field and/or previous work with adolescent students.
  • Record of dependability, punctuality, flexibility and strong attendance.
  • Genuine desire and ability to work effectively with a diverse student and staff population.
  • Ability and willingness to work outside school hours for various onsite and offsite events.
  • High standards of appearance and professionalism; positive role model.
  • Good physical condition; able to stand for prolonged periods, work outdoors in inclement weather, and handle distraught or upset people.
  • Ability to judge ambiguous situations and act appropriately.
  • Exercise independent judgment; model nondiscriminatory practices.
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License with a safe driving record.
  • Apply appropriate discipline per district policies and procedures.
  • Comply with all district policies and operational procedures.
  • Maintain district-assigned email; read and respond to messages regularly.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Manage change and resolve conflict.
  • Remain calm and professional in stressful or negative situations.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with local law enforcement agencies.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English preferred; interpret as needed if possessing multiple language skills.
  • Maintain records.
Job Requirements
  • High School/Trade School degree preferred.
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
