- Understand and practice safe respiratory care techniques.
- Perform initial setup of respiratory equipment and supplies—Oxygen, Aerosol, Suction, Ventilators, DiPAP, etc.—for residents in nursing homes.
- Provide appropriate treatment to help residents maintain or attain the highest level of respiratory function possible within the confines of their physical condition.
- Maintain timely and accurate resident reports as required by federal, state and local regulatory agencies and third‑party payers.
- Assume duties related to completion of minimum data set assessments as assigned.
- Complete documentation related to evaluations, treatment plans, MDS assessments, resident care conferences and rehabilitation conferences as scheduled.
- Set up, clean, assemble, maintain, and operate equipment in a safe manner.
- Demonstrate and educate new and existing clients and caregivers on proper use and maintenance of equipment.
- Coordinate the pick‑up and return of equipment for preventative maintenance and repair.
- Provide in‑services and training to LTC facility staff and community.
- Be responsible for trach changes as specified in the policy and procedure.
- Oversee routine maintenance of facility‑owned equipment per policy and procedures.
- Maintain adequate supply of respiratory equipment and disposable supplies.
- Participate in facility departmental in‑services and education classes. Attend all mandatory in‑service classes.
- Assist in obtaining physician documentation as needed.
- Conduct, participate in and document, as appropriate, meetings with associates and LTC facility staff as needed.
- Participate in implementation of programs to improve resident care related to quality indicators.
- Meet all state requirements for obtaining and maintaining professional licensure.
- Perform CPR and maintain current CPR certification.
- Maintain personal competency levels for all respiratory therapy modalities.
- Communicate matters concerning respiratory care and treatment to appropriate interdisciplinary team members.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
- Comply with Universal Precautions and Blood Borne Pathogens regulations.
- Follow resident’s rights policies at all times.
- Graduate of a Joint Review Committee for Respiratory Therapy Education (JRCRTE) approved program of respiratory care required.
- Clinical experience as provided by a JRCRTE approved school or respiratory care.
- Ability, as certified by the supervisor, to render independent professional/respiratory care procedures.
- Clinical evaluation skills required.
- Strong communication skills required.
- Active member of the AARC preferred.
- CRTT, RRT, or proof of application to the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) to sit for the Certified Respiratory Therapy Technician (CRTT) exam required.
- State license as required. CPR required.
