Nature of Work
This position is responsible for officiating at competitive athletic or sporting events, detecting infractions of rules and deciding penalties according to established regulations of the sporting event.
Communicates with:
- Internally – Parks and Recreation staff.
- Externally – General public.
Supervision: None
Essential Work Functions- Officiates sporting events to maintain standards of play and ensure game rules are observed.
- Informs participants of sporting event infractions.
- Inspects sporting equipment and/or examines participants to ensure compliance with event and safety regulations.
- Keeps track of event times when necessary.
- Judges performances to award points, impose scoring penalties, and determine results.
- Resolves claims of rule infractions or complaints by participants and assesses necessary penalties.
- Confers with other sport officials, coaches, players, and/or Parks and Recreation Superintendent to provide information, originate activities, and discuss problems.
- Compiles scores and other athletic records.
- Reports complaints made, actions taken, or needed.
- If necessary, explains rules and regulations governing the specific sport.
- Performs related work as required.
- Be at least 15 years of age.
- Have the desire to work with the public.
- Be available to work a part‑time schedule of up to 10‑20 hours per week.
- Thorough knowledge of rules and methods of play for the event or game to which assigned.
- Able to exercise fair and impartial judgment and render decisions quickly.
- Able to maintain order and secure respect of game participants.
- Able to score and time various sporting events.
- Able to keep records and make reports.
- Must be tactful and courteous to players and spectators.
- Must have the physical condition commensurate with the duties of the position.
