Transportation Worker 3 Equipment Operator

Ohio County, Moundsville, WV – District:
Heavy Maintenance, Disforce – Bridge Repair Crew (Daily reporting: D6 Marshall County Headquarters)
Under general supervision, performs full‑performance level skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways. Operates motorized highway maintenance equipment such as skid steer, utility tractor, aerial bucket truck, front‑end loader, tandem‑axle truck, and snowplow. Makes major repairs to highways, culverts, and bridge structures. Performs minor mechanical repairs in the field such as changing tires, blades, or filters. Responsible for maintaining equipment, including cleaning, lubricating, and checking fluid levels.
May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performs related work as required, including flagging, erecting traffic control signs and barricades, shoveling materials, cleaning culverts, mowing, and brush cutting.
Selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression depends on hours completed, proficiency, training, and maintaining or obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
PayPay Grade: 12H — Hourly Rate: $22.71
TypicalDuties & Responsibilities
- Operates hydraulic crane.
- Utilizes heavy motorized equipment to excavate, backfill, grade, or level soil and aggregate.
- Grades surfaces, rolls or compacts soil and aggregate.
- Leads or trains lower‑level equipment operators.
- Assists the Core Driller in positioning the drilling rig, adding rods or augers, removing core samples, cleaning and maintaining the rig and related tools and equipment.
- Installs steel piling in pre‑drilled holes and cleans the drilling site of debris after drilling.
- Sets and detonates explosive charges for earth removal.
- Travel may be required; valid driver’s license required.
- Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver License (CDL) required.
- Knowledge of safety practices used in structural steel construction.
- Knowledge of procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures.
- Knowledge of basic blueprint reading.
- Knowledge of general construction and maintenance practices.
- Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in maintenance, repair, and overhaul of gasoline and diesel‑powered engines and their components.
- Knowledge of operation of motor‑driven equipment.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate repair procedures.
- Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
- Ability to read operation manuals, blueprints, and specifications.
- Ability to operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
- Ability to perform skilled trades work in bridge construction and maintenance.
- Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to maintain accurate records of daily maintenance activities and of gauges and meters used in heating, ventilation and cooling systems.
- Ability to climb high steel structures.
- Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi‑skilled workers.
Training/
Education:
No formal education required.
Experience: Valid Class A or B CDL and four (4) years of full‑time or equivalent part‑time paid experience operating heavy equipment such as bulldozers, end loaders, dump trucks, drillers, etc. A successful completion of an approved vocational school program may substitute two (2) years of the required experience.
