Job Description

Reports To: Principal

Supervises: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.

Purpose: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manage Instructional Time: Prepare materials, supplies, and equipment for each lesson; begin class quickly; maintain high student time-on-task.
  • Manage Student Behavior: Establish rules and procedures for administrative matters, verbal participation, talk, and movement; monitor behavior during all activities; address inappropriate behavior promptly and with dignity.
  • Instructional Presentation: Review prior materials, introduce objectives, speak fluently, present lessons using clear concepts, give examples, assign tasks, ask appropriate questions, maintain brisk pace and smooth transitions, and summarize key points.
  • Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance: Set clear standards and due dates; circulate during class to check performance; use oral, written, and other work products to assess progress; ask clear, one-at-a-time questions.
  • Instructional Feedback: Provide feedback on in-class and out-of-class work to encourage growth; affirm correct responses; offer sustaining feedback for incorrect or no responses.
  • Facilitating Instruction: Develop instructional plans aligned with school and system goals; use diagnostic information to revise objectives; maintain accurate records; match resources to student needs.
  • Interacting Within the Educational Environment: Treat all students fairly; interact effectively with students, co-workers, parents, and community.
  • Performing Non-Instructional Duties: Carry out assigned duties; comply with laws and policies; pursue professional development; maintain progress toward a current NC Educator’s License.
  • Perform other related work as required.
Minimum Training and Experience

Degree in education or related field that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Physical ability to use classroom equipment, lift, carry, push, and pull light objects; consistent with Light Work.
  • Ability to compare and judge characteristics of data, people, or objects.
  • Interpersonal communication skills to convey information and follow instructions.
  • Language ability to read and prepare written materials.
  • Analytical skills to apply logic and scientific thinking.
  • Verbal aptitude to explain procedures and communicate in professional contexts.
  • Numerical aptitude to perform basic mathematics and interpret statistics.
  • Spatial and motor coordination to handle objects and use office equipment.
  • Manual dexterity and color discrimination as required.
  • Interpersonal temperament to handle stress and emergency situations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Maintain safety and well‑being of students, especially in inclusive activities.
  • Motivate students.
  • Maintain clean and orderly environment; perform general clerical duties.
  • Maintain order, discipline, and basic records.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Establish effective working relationships.
