Job Description

Reports To: Principal

Supervises: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.

Purpose: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manage instruction time: prepare materials, supplies, and equipment before each lesson, start class quickly, keep students on task.
  • Manage student behavior: establish rules and procedures for administrative matters, verbal participation, movement; monitor behavior during activities and transitions; address inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently.
  • Instructional presentation: review previous materials, introduce lesson and objectives; speak fluently; present concepts using understandable language; provide examples and demonstrations; assign tasks with high success rate; ask appropriate questions; conduct lesson at brisk pace, adjust pace as needed; transition smoothly; summarize main points.
  • Instructional monitoring of student performance: maintain clear standards and deadlines; circulate during class work to check performance; use oral, written, and other work products to check progress; pose questions clearly and one at a time.
  • Instructional feedback: provide feedback on in-class work to encourage growth; give prompt feedback on out-of-class work; affirm correct responses; provide sustaining feedback after incorrect or no response.
  • Facilitating instruction: have instructional plan aligned with school and system-wide goals; use diagnostic information to develop or revise objectives; maintain accurate records; match objectives, learning strategies, assessment to student needs; use resources to support program.
  • Interacting within the educational environment: treat all students fairly and equitably; interact effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and community.
  • Performing non‑instructional duties: carry out non‑instructional duties as assigned; adhere to laws, policies, rules, and regulations; follow professional development plan; hold or actively progress toward NC Educator’s License in assigned content area.
Additional Job Functions

Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Training and Experience

Degree in education or a related area that will qualify for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

  • Motor Coordination: Coordinate hands and eyes for office equipment.
  • Manual Dexterity: Handle various items; minimal eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Color Discrimination: Differentiate colors and shades.
  • Interpersonal Temperament: Adapt to stress and emergency situations.
  • Physical Communication: Talk and hear; communicate via telephone.
