Pay Range: $47,673.00 - $66,742.00

- Supervises, leads, and participates in the work of maintenance and construction crews engaged in water and sewer system projects;
- Assures that safety practices are followed;
- Assures that crews are employing efficient and effective methods;
- Operates heavy construction and maintenance equipment for installing water and sewer lines and facilities;
- Cleans utility lines, storm drains, catch basins and appurtenances;
- Operates bulldozer, compactor, front end loader, crane, backhoe, track dozer, excavator, sewer cleaning and other heavy equipment;
- Delegates utility tasks for each specific job site;
Ensures all necessary equipment/materials are present for the job site; - Installs water and sewer taps;
- Repairs and replaces water meters, meter boxes, and fire hydrants;
- Responds to citizen complaints and problems;
- Services and makes repairs and adjustments on equipment;
- Maintains daily records of parts used;
- Completes work orders;
- Evaluates the performance of assigned personnel;
- Performs other duties as assigned.
This position involves very heavy work requiring the employee to exert to 100 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Sufficient visual acuity is required to visually inspect and assemble small parts involved in the operation of machines and determine if small defects are present and use measuring devices.
An employee in this position will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions; subject to hazards including work in high places, exposure to working mechanical parts, electrical currents, and exposure to chemicals; and subject to extreme heat and cold, noise and vibrations, and working in narrow or close quarters. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance of construction equipment; considerable knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to perform construction work in and around traffic; considerable knowledge of the methods, equipment and materials used in the construction and maintenance of water and sewer systems, etc.;
skill and care in the operation of a variety of construction equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to perform minor mechanical procedures; ability to supervise, train and instruct subordinates; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, superiors, and citizens.
Graduation from high school and five years experience in heavy equipment operation (i.e., backhoe) and the required certifications; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Additional RequirementMust possess a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License and water distribution or wastewater collection certification.
