General Statement of Duties

Performs semi-skilled work in maintenance and construction of water and sewer system; performs related duties as required.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

Employees in this class perform work involving a variety of water and sewer systems projects and related tasks. Work involves the use of a variety of tools and light and medium equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of the Water and Sewer Superintendent and is evaluated through observation and inspection to determine thoroughness in carrying out assigned duties.

Essential Job Functions
  • Work on a crew to clean, repair or construct water or sewer lines;
  • Make water or sewer taps, service extensions, set meters, install or repair hydrants;
  • Perform a variety of maintenance tasks such as operating tractors for cutting grass, using power hand equipment;
  • Remove leaves and debris, trim shrubbery, and clear and landscape rights of way;
  • Operate heavy equipment including trucks, dump trucks, rollers, tractors, loaders, and other medium and light equipment;
  • Perform general maintenance on equipment such as stocking vehicles prior to shift;
  • Set up work zones as directed by Crew Leader;
  • Perform other duties as needed.
Job Related Physical Activity Requirements

This position involves heavy work requiring the employee to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects. Physical activity may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Sufficient visual acuity is required to inspect and assemble small parts involved in the operation of machines and determine if small defects are present and use measuring devices.

The employee will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions; subject to hazards including work in high places, exposure to working mechanical parts, electrical currents, and chemicals; and subject to extreme heat and cold, noise and vibrations, and working in narrow or close quarters. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

Required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of methods and techniques applied in semi-skilled trades work; working knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment utilized in water and sewer construction and repair; working knowledge of standard hand tools, operation of light equipment, and materials used in assigned work; working knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned work; working knowledge of basic carpentry, plumbing, and masonry;

ability to work cooperatively as a team member and respond courteously to citizens; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions.

Acceptable Experience and Training

Graduation from high school and some experience in trades related to water and sewer construction; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Additional Requirement

Must possess a valid North Carolina Driver's License.
